That's a very cool looking bass.
I love it!

Tell us more about it - what are the timbers used?

Does it have to have those particular tuners? I reckon it'd look a lot cooler with open tuners like on a P-bass. Something about the golden colour of the cog going well with the colour of the wood. The black tuners just look too timid.

I offer HipShot ultralights as an added cost option. So no, it doesn't have to have these particular ones. However, the basses are SO light, that a lightweight set is pretty necessary. Full Pbass sized machines would make it neck heavy. This one weighs in a bit more than other four stringers I've built(5 lbs. 15oz.), as the body is pretty large, even though it's made from Western Red Cedar, an acoustic stringed instrument topwood. Neck is maple; appointments are pao ferro.
Five of the Hipshot machines weigh the same as these four....so they are pretty much required on the five string basses.

Ok, I hadn't thought of the weight factor, just the aesthetics.

Damn, Dave - that's one beautiful instrument. Great 'sweep' up the neck. Red cedar - I can beat moths to death with its spare awesome-ness.

I don't think the top one should grow legs - it should grow a stand. I could see playing that sitting with the neck almost straight up. How did you think it would be played?
Both are beautiful! Tom

I thought the same thing, Tom. If it had a scrolled headstock I would have thought it to be larger, at least cello size.

If it's a beauty contest between these two basses this one is the winner. I love it.
To the first post - I like the body shape more for an electric upright than as a bass guitar. But what does my opinion count? Money talks, bulls*** walks, right? I've never been a fan of the ol' Beatles/viola bass shape anyhow, but somebody's buying them.

The doghouse shaped bass is a custom order. That's what the customer wanted; it added about $300 to the "base" price of the instrument.
Basses start at $1200; A full tilt glossy five string with HipShot machines, ebony board, sunburst and a gloss finish runs well south of $2K.
