Just got off the phone with Adam Palow in Florida, the owner and only builder of these amps.
Super nice guy, answered all the questions I had and then some, and you could just hear that "no compromise in quality" coming through the phone! \:\)

GEEZ...these amps are dripping with some mighty fine tone! \:\)

http://www.tungstenamp.com/home.htm

http://reviews.harmony-central.com/revie...+112+Combo/10/1

I can't believe the prices of these amps either...but, they won't stay that way for long.

Man, these are hand built, point to point, hand wired amps with all the high end electronics and speakers you could ask for.

Of course, they're only single channel amps and are without reverb.
Adam says he has no plans to put reverb in them but that he may build an outboard reverb unit in the future.

Go to the website and check out the audio clips on these amps.
The guy playing works his guitar volume knob up and down and the amp goes from pristine clean to a beautiful scratchy, gritty gain that just sings! \:\)

Hey Dawg, thanks for turning me on to these amps.
This may be one! \:\)

Randy

How can you go wrong following the classic vintage Fender formula! The only place he dropped the ball was not having a single 15 amp! Good stuff! \:\)

Holy crap, Randy! Those things sound great! And look great too. And some mighty fine playing by our fellow forumite, Yze! Thanks for the link.

Reverb, I don't need no stinking reverb! Not with an amp that sounds that good!

I'm confused...which Tungsten are you looking at that you can buy two for $1500...?

They are all over $1k from what I saw...?

No, the Cortez is just over a 1000...but for that, I wouldn't mind going a little over budget.
2000 was my tops. \:D

That Cortez sounds fabuloso!

Hmmmmm....do I feel another GAS attack coming on....

But he has several other models....wonder how the others sound? Good, I'm sure, but what are their tone flavors...?

I agree it would be nice to have a 15" speaker availability, but that's really a niche product. These amps are built by a single guy, who likely is busy with what he currently offers. A special order should be do-able, though. I'd like to see a head offered.

Yeah, the Cortez (wish he'd named it somethin' different, though, Cortez was a turd) and Bluepoint models are very interesting, ESPECIALLY at those prices!

Hey, when I was talking to the guy this morning and he was describing how he was the owner, builder, the MAIN MAN...and I was thinking...."HELL YEAH, now this is what I'm looking for!" \:D

I mean, here's a guy that knows what the hell he's doing, absolutely refuses to sacrifice quality, and he builds the amps his damn self! \:\)

I told him that he was going to have to expand soon and hire some folks.
He told me...he didn't really want to get into that because then he couldn't keep a handle on quality control, because he trusts his own work.

I'm telling you, hearing those words impressed the hell out of me.
I'm thinking I may be ordering a couple of Cortez's or maybe even a single Blue Point. \:\)

Oh yeah, there's about 4 sound clips on that website if you check them out.

Randy

Yeah...Brian Gerard of Top Hat Amps is the same way.
I've called Top Hat about 5-6 times...and he is the only one that ever answers the phone.

So...how much tone differences are there between the small/large Cortez amps, I wonder?
I love the sound clip tones of the smaller Cortez...very sweet...I may go for one.

I was just checking out the Sligo Amps... http://www.sligoamps.com which is yet another small builder doing high-end amps. His are even a bit less $$$ than the Tungston ones.

I'm not sure.
He's about 4 or 5 hours from me near Orlando, Fl.
Hell, I'm almost thinking about a road trip...and take my check book. \:D

Oh yeah, he said shipping to me would be about $30 per amp.
That's not too bad considering the weight. \:\)
He said he double packs them too, so you don't have to worry unless the UPS driver goes wacko. \:D

My pleasure Randy... I had the tech at Legends in Tampa put the Antiquitys in my LP and while I was BS'in with him I saw those amps in the demo room... I asked about them and they told me they were sweet and built the way they should be built... I had plans on test drivin' them but I didn't have time so I looked em' up on the net... I saw that Yze did the clips and review for them and if they're good for Yze then that's good for me... I may get one in the future but I don't need one... I think they have a good return policy too Randy...

Eh...I've never been one of those guys that orders something to try it out and then ship it back.
If I buy a couple and wind up not liking them, I'll simply sell them at a profit. ;\) \:D

Yeah, I've got one of my amps sold and as soon as the other one sells, I'm taking an Orlando trip to pick them out.

Film...at eleven. \:D

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

I have built a few 15" amps (5E5-A, 15" Mosaic) and am glad to do them on request. Special order cabinets can take up to 30 days for delivery.

It was good to talk to you Randy. My cabinet order will be arrive within days, reducing the lead time on those amps significantly.

Also, if you'd like to hear a Cortez in action, tune into Conan O'Brien tonight and hear Joel Graves of the band Everest playing the Cortez w/Alnico Blue speaker.

Hi Adam

Nice of you to pop in and post up...we are interested in your amps.

I listened to the Cortez clips on your website...but I would really love to also hear the differences between the regular Cortez and the 25W version before making any buying decisions.
I think one of these will find its way into my studio in the near future along side my other amps.

Welcome to the clan Adam... Your amps really caught my eye at Legends... I wish I could have driven a couple but Yze did a good job of leaning on em'... They are sweet lookin' and they ARE built the way they're supposed to be... Keep up the good work and stop in here once in awhile...

Thanks, guys. I'm going to drop off a couple amps to Geoff (yZe) next week, one of them being a 25 watt Cortez. Look for new sound clips in 10-14 days or so.

I think I just saw on the Tungsten "For Sale Page" the small piece of info that was missing from the Cortez description page that tells me exactly what I wanted to know about the differences between the standard Cortez and the 25W Cortez.

Is the 25W Cortez only 6L6 based? \:\)
That will sure make it different sounding from the 6V6 Cortez.
If so...that also tells me which one I would buy...
…the 6V6 Cortez w/Weber Blue Dog!

But I will wait for the new sound clips....

I'm so close...the GAS is really hitting hard again...but damn, there are a whole bunch of nice amps on eBay at the moment that I'm also watching!

Both Cortez amps can run 6V6 or 6L6. The 25 Watter with 6V6's does sound a little different than the standard Cortez with the same tube compliment. This is due to the larger OT and more powerful speaker in the 25 Watter.

If you're seeking maximum grind, I recommend the Cortez. If you'd like more clean headroom and punch before breakup the 25 Watt is the way to go. It still does the singing compression thing, but is a hair less raunchy than the regular Cortez.

Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.

Heck...who wants a clean amp when you can have a raunchy one with maximum grind.

;\)

Actually...I would have to think about the amp choice and discuss that with you before making a purchase decision.
I would want the amp that will fit in with my others...but still have its own, unique tonal palate, rather than a lot of same tones and overlap.
I will give you a call when I am ready to pull the trigger...

Hi Adam!
I told you I was going to start a Tungsten thread here. \:\) \:D

Yeah, RampDawg turned us on to your amps...and the rest is history. \:D

I've got one amp out of two sold, so I'm almost ready to call you up, set up an appointment, and make an Orlando road trip! \:D
I want 2 amps to run stereo...so checking out your amps should be a Gear Hound's dream. \:D

Hey, it was good talking to you on the phone and I look forward to meeting you in person. \:\)
At the moment...I'm working on the wife real hard to let me go ahead and buy these amps and pay her back when my other 2 amps sell. \:D

Damn, ain't being married a biotch sometimes? ;\)
