You never know what to expect.

The most recent description offered from a listener:
"Steely Dan meets Emerson Lake & Palmer"

Not quite sure what to make of that.

At least they compared you to two good great bands! \:D They could have said something like: "Creed meets Warrant" \:D \:D LOL!

Light...aromatic,
poignant yet, not over bearing. \:D

I find it interesting that people pick up more on what I would consider secondary influences. My main guys these days are Scofield and Stern, but I hear a lot of people say "Larry Carlton". I take LC on a more conceptual level, not so much actual note and chord choices.

That's actually a good goal for my sound: "Poignant yet not overbearing"

Well, in this review of a song off of our disc the writer likens it to Boston and the Cars. I just don't hear it myself...

But hey, there's no such thing as bad publicity, right?

We conceived of it as a Neil Young ripoff. In fact, before the lyrics were written, we referred to it as "Neil's Revenge..."

Like Greg B. mentioned, there are certainly worse comparisons than those mentioned. Of course folks will often compare to the music THEY are familiar with and might not even know of your influences that may be coming out in your music. Personally, I find the ultimate compliment when some one says something like, "man, that music is uniquely YOU." Of course there is the flip side to that being the cover up of them actually thinking, "what the HELL was THAT?" \:D Kind of like Mozart saying to Salieri, "I never knew music like that was possible." \:D

For what it is worth Billster, and no joke - from what I have heard, I think your music is quite unique.

The most memorable description of our music from a fan of any band I was in was "thud-like & crunchy." LOL \:D

The thing is, "thud-like & crunchy" was actually a pretty good description of our sound. We started printing "thud-like & crunchy" on posters for our gigs.

My bass players son described us as being "rockin' blues with a funk you can smell" I think that it sums us up.

When they say "I never heard anything like that" it all depends on how they accent the last word. \:D

A band that was playing before us, upon the conclusion of their set, announced to the audience "Stick around for the Majesty of Tangy!"

People seem to like my playing, but as far as I know no one has ever categorized it or compared me to anyone famous... what that says I'm not sure. But I don't really care, as long as they let me play with and for them!

Hah! The way any given individual might categorize or describe anything of my own that I might play for them has always depended largely on (A) what that person's favorite styles of music are, and (B) (to a lesser extent) whether I play it- the same piece, played with the same feel, phrasing, etc., for the most part- on electric or acoustic, clean or overdriven.

Even when I use a flat-top acoustic to play the same thing the same way on two different occasions, I'm likely to get two very different descriptions from two different people...
