Hey guys,
tomorrow, a buddy of mine is helping me out and hooking me up with an amp tomorrow. He says that he'll lend me like $200-$300.
Any ideas? I like how most Vox amps have the multiple amp 'type' selector. Anything good you guys can recommend?
For a reference of the tone I'm looking to achieve, think of something between Rage Against the Machine and Godsmack.
Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

The money you're talkin' is gonna get ya into a solid state new amp, up to about 30 watts, or a small used or very old and beat-up tube amp. We need to know more about your needs and wants here.

"I like how most Vox amps have the multiple amp 'type' selector."
I'm guessing that you're referring to digital-modeling based Vox amps here.
And, as you state that you're a "nOOb", a modeling type amp should actually do you pretty fine, if you're playing at home, for/by yourself, for the most part.
If you're looking to play with friends in a band/group/jam setting, digital modelers can be sort of lacking, in a weird way, seeming to sort of thin-out and disappear in the context of the mix with the other instruments.
But, maybe one will work fine for you there, too; it is a bit subjective, too. The only way to know is to try as many different kinds of amps as you can and go with what satisfies you well and good enough for what you can afford.
It's all too easy to get caught up in thinking you need what you really don't here!

I know relatively little about the difference between Tube amps and Solid State amps (sound wise, I know what the difference is physically), could someone explain how they sound different?
As well, I was wondering about brands... there's tonnes of them out there, and its hard to tell which ones are worth buying into. There's the obvious ones like Vox (that has an ad or two in pretty much every guitar mag I have) but there's other ones that I've seen lots of amps from (like Kustom, I've seen lots of those) but I've never heard anything about brand quality.
