Hey guys, I'm playing a Peavey Grind 4-string bass through a Hartke 5500 amp + VX215 cab. Sounds good enough for me as it is, but I'm looking for a decent and simple enough to use sound-enhancing gadget. I have a Zoom pedal with a lot of stuff in it, by I mostly find it useful as a tuner, 'cause it looks too complicated to switch from one sound (ex.: chorus) to regular...I've looked around, but nothing seems to stand out..

I play rock stuff (Stones, Tragically Hip, The Cult, Nei Young/ Crazy Horse). Any suggestions as to useful gadgets used for that type of music ? I'd like a single (or couple, tops) pedal that covers the important effects. I presume chorus, flange, overdrive are the ones, am I right ?

Thanks in advance !

You don't need any effects to play that kind of music.

Agreed. \:\)

But let us know what sounds you're after and we can recommend some things. Right now you've given a lot of examples of 'non affected' bass playing.

Which Zoom pedal?? When I was using my 506 (I think??) I used just a touch of the octave (it farts out on a low E or F), and the least bit of Hall reverb for home play. Left out the reverb for gigs. Also, a tiny bit of the chorus effect goes a long way. I didn't use the EQ section at all, or the amp simulator.

Peace

I used to use a lot of chorus and reverb... 20 years ago... Now, they are both so low, they might as well be off.

I have a Zoom B2. What does it sound like? I have no idea, I don't have a clue on how to use it. I've read the manuel 2-3 times and don't know anymore now than I did when I started.
I agree that a bass player does not need any electro-whiz-bang black box help, just good fingers.

Welcome and thanks for joining in!

I messed around with a borrowed Zoom 506. I probably could have tweaked and changed around the order of the patches to make it reasonable for live, but it just didn't seem worth it.

Mad Mike - I play classic rock and have not felt the need for many effects. I use a Programmable SansAmp for a bit of boost (for solo passages) and for a touch of overdrive for some different tones. Nothing dramatic. There are plenty of preamp/overdrives on the market these days that can give you what I was looking for, including (but not limited to):

MXR 80
Hughes Kettner TubeFactor
EBS ValveDrive

Just about every manufacturer has an overdrive pedal. Want to go nuts? Spend some time at PedalGeek.com.

The Peavey 4 string (Grinds) need some power boost. Perhaps some overdrive. The effects pedals tend to give that bass some boost. Just my experience.

I have about 7 pedals of various flavors, mostly Bosses. I find that I use the overdrive pedal for a little fuzz on some of the Cream covers (just a touch) and I bust out the Crybaby for some wah when covering some Geezer solos.

For the most part, the pedals sit on the shelf and get dusted weekly.

I'm in agreement with Jeremy that if you're playing that kind of music you don't need much in the way of effects. Don't put the cart before the horse.

Now if you had said you listen to a lot of Peter Gabriel, P-Funk or Pink Floyd...

I do agree the pedals are just toys for me, but they do add power. There are better ways to add power though...

Rocky, thanks for the reply. I have the B1 and after spending a good part of last night trying to find a way to have a few effects within 1 or 2 taps, I think it just can't be done that way. If you choose an effect, I think it has to stay on for the whole song.

Take care !

Paul, I have the Zoom B1. I just want to have a couple of effects (octave, chorus, reverb...) within 1 or 2 taps for either boost or effect. Still trying to figure it out !

Thanks and peace back to you, dude !

Hi Tom, thanks for the reply and I agree, the SansAmp seems to be THE effect that stands out. I've looked up your suggestions also.

Thanks !

I used to have a Zoom 506II. I set up a clean no effect patch then on either side of it I set up effected patches, usually one with chorus and the other with octaver. So, for example, if my clean patch was A3, all I would need to do to add chorus was to hit the right pedal and go to patch A4, for the octaver I would hit the left pedal for patch A2. All you need to do is set up a patch with no effects then copy it to the next patch and add the effect you want and save it. Get it?
