Alan "Dr. Licks" Slutsky, author of "Standing In The Shadows of Motown", has also written a great book called "The Great James Brown Rhythm Sections," which contains transcriptions, recordings, and explanations.

Sorry, Ray Parker, Jr.; Jimmy Nolen was bringing the funk on his guitar probably well before you were a twinkle in Ray, Sr.'s eye...
