Drinks are the best at sonic. Whataburger is the best- but its only in texas.
Looks like Whataburger is expanding - http://www.whataburger.com/one_near_you.php
Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, New Mexico.

Wow, I didn't realize this. I went to NM a few years ago and didn't see any. I can see why they're expanding.
I don't think in n'out is that great either. Not bad, but I don't get what the craze is about.

Cheesesteaks on hoagie rolls only. Authentic=roll, steak, cheese - white American, Cheese Whiz (if you must ), or provolone on a pizza steak - and fried onions. That's it. Mushrooms, peppers (steak bomb) or lettuce/tomato/mayo (steak hoagie) etc are okay of course...but they're the exception, not the rule. dB
Are you sure??? What, no cilantro???

Super-sonic with cheese & mustard and tots! I have 2 Sonics within blocks of my house. White Castle was about a block away, but they closed a couple years ago. We eat very good out here in Kansas! (if you like awesome BBQ, steaks, burgers, and other carnivore adventures). Gotto go now - it's dinner time! The Wife & I eat out every night of the week.

Sooner or later I'll get my tail back up there and try the options. It's been way too long, and when I *was* there, it wasn't long enough to see any of the sights. The only thing I remember besides the cheesesteaks are the "streets" that are now basically alleys...

Never tried Sonic, but based on these reviews I will be sure to give them a spin.
My favorite burgers are the ones I cook on the grill, nice and thick. Add Lawry's seasoned salt, a little regular salt, pepper, a touch of garlic powder, cooked medium rare...I salivate as I write this.

back on topic - Stepay, have they been running the crazy Sonic ads up there yet, the ones with two people in the car who say goofy things to each other?
I was just looking at their site, and was reminded of something else. When I moved from LI to MI and then TX, I encountered "Coneys." I had no idea what they were talking about. Back home we just called them hot dogs, mebbe hot dogs with chili and cheese if you were feeling adventurous.

Here in Oregon, we've got Burgerville, the chain stretches to about 60 miles around Portland. Really good burgers, they switched to all organic, local beef a few years ago with the mad cow scare, but they were good before that too. Amazing seasonal onion rings too.
Here in town, we have a local legend, the Squirrel burger at Squirrel's Tavern: a burger with a fried egg, cheese and a slice of ham. Over the top, but yummy.
Dammit, now I'm hungry.

1) Vista Burger- Lawrence and Manhattan, KS. Probably one of the few things K- Staters and Jayhawks agree upon (other than we hate Mizzou). Great thin burgers, one of the few corndogs you'd ever actually eat, and THE BEST CRUSHED ICE IN THE WORLD. I knew guys who would roll out of bed with a wicked college-boy hangover, bypass the soda machine in the stairwell of the frat house, and get in their car and drive to Vista to get a Coke with THE BEST CRUSHED ICE IN THE WORLD. Hard to describe- soft, airy, if it was pasta you'd call it al dente.
It's been a few years. They may have screwed it all up by now, but worth a try if you're in the area.
One of the few great things to come out of Manhattan, KS. ; )
2) Winsteads- KC area favorite. Greatest burgers in the world per NY food writer Calvin Trillin, but you have to understand that according to CT the burger place you loved in your youth will always be the "world's greatest".
3) Steak 'n Shake- memories of St Louis, good basic thin burger, excellent skinny fries, sit at the counter.
4) White Castle- an acquired taste (usually acquired on the way home from a night of carousing). Odd (really) little square things, fried and sorta steamed with lots of onions.
5) Culver's- "butter burgers". Need I say more.
6) Louie M's Burger Lust- Omaha favorite- greatest name for a burger place.
7) Runza- really good burgers, but the best thing is the "Runza"- a fast food version of a Czech sandwich. Ground beef, onions, cabbage (cheese optional) baked in a home made bread pocket. Very Nebraska (they sell 'em at Husker games). Killer O rings.
Man, I'm getting hungry.

If anyone is ever in Ann Arbor, you MUST go here:
http://www.blimpyburger.com/
Absolute best burgers on the planet, bar none.
Believe it or not, but I've never been to Kewpee's here in Lansing. I may stop by tomorrow and give it a try. I have a hard time believing they can compare to Blimpy Burger, though.

Charlottesville, VA - you gotta go to 5 Guys Burgers 'n' Fries - the Burgers are amazing, and they have the potatoes of the day (along with locality where they were grown) on display for the fresh cut fries. Yum!
They tried to franchise to Lynchburg (two locations, one failed, the other one is about to because it SUCKS!) - just a further indication of how fully f***ed up this town really is.

That's on the Mexican Philly cheesesteak. Don't forget to add chipotle smoked jalapeno peppers!
By the way, a big "+1" on Chipotle Mexican Grill -- Mexican fast food that's better than many restaurants!

Weird about Blimpy Burger because I lived in Ann Arbor for two years and I never ate there. I see someone else mentioned Zingerman's Deli. Now I HAVE eaten there. Great, but not burgers obviously. I didn't even know about Blimpy Burger until I saw the Food Network thing Kanker mentioned (Diners, Drivethrus, and Dives -- one of my favorite shows).

1) Crazy Sonic ads? Yep. 2) Coneys? Yep. That's what Midwesterners call a hot dog with chili. Without chili it's just a hot dog.

Not sure if you knew this, but 5 Guys is a nationwide franchise growing like crazy. We have a bunch in Richmond and I've tried a few and had inconsistent experiences. I know they use "fresh/never frozen" meat, but I was not blown away by the burgers. The fresh-cut fries are pretty good, but not any better than other places that use fresh-cut fries. Maybe the C-ville location is extra special, but I'm not seeing anything so great about the 5 Guys in my neck of the woods. I'd take it over BK or McD's any day.
