Sonic, the fast food drive-in has begun to infiltrate Ohio, and there is now one about 2 miles from my house. I have never eaten at a Sonic in my life, and while I usually eat well balanced meals filled with veggies and fruit, I do on occasion like to try something new that might not necessarily be good for me.
So...any must-have's at Sonic or things to stay away from?
Thanks!

Sonic is good. I remember the original drive in chain from my gigging days out in Kansas, but the new franchise is a bit more upscale and less greasy.
The onion rings are fabulous, as are the pork tenderloin sandwiches.

I went to Sonic for the very first time last summer and liked it. We've had them in VA for awhile, but I rarely eat fast food. I was on a band gig road trip down to Duck, NC on one of the rare occasions that I don't drive. My gear was riding in our soundman's truck and I was with the horn section, stylin' & profilin' in a nice BMW. Apparently the horns (we call them "The Pillars of Soul") are big fans of Sonic and stop there all the time. They introduced me to the bacon double cheeseburger and some kind of fritos with melted cheese and chili. It was delicious and I would eat there again. Also, the fresh squeezed limeade was excellent. We went on the way to the gig and on the way home late at night. I had a hot dog on the 2nd visit and liked that as well.
I have not been to Sonic since that hot August day, but mouth is watering at the moment.
Regards, Eric

We've got one just down the street from us, and I'll go there once in a while. primarily for the limeade. Worth the trip just by itself.

It's time, once again, to rank the top Ten (10) Burger joints. - JUST BURGERS.
They can be local to your 'hood.
Or, if you prefer, you can rank the lowest Ten (10).
Nevertheless, #1 must be your favorite. #10 must be your least favorite. The stuff in the middle doesn't count as much.
In Raleigh, there's a place called "Char-Grill". In fact, there are 3 locations. They make a great hamburger-steak sandwich.
#1. Char-Grill 2. Wendy's 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. McDonald's 9. Hardees 10. Burger King
We don't have White Castle in North Carolina (as far as I know). I've never eaten there... heard they're great.
I don't think I've had Sonic. If I have, it's been so long that I can't remember.
I've never had Carl's Jr. Isn't there one called Outhouse. Naaaaah. Cookout. It's Cookout, right?
Like eric, I try to stay away from this stuff. But sometimes, when you're riding with the horn players...

When I was at NAMM in January, I tried the In & Out Burger and really liked it. I would go there more if they existed on the East Coast. I'm having a hard time naming a favourite, since A) I generally avoid these places and B) I don't get burgers very often at all. I would probably rank the Sonic burger I ate last summer near the top of the heap.

+1 on the chili cheese coney. Coming of age, as I did, 75 miles south of Cincy, the blessed duo of Skyline and Gold Star was a feature of life. Near Indiana U when I was there in the late 70's a couple from Erlanger KY kept the banner of Cincinnati chili flying at a restaurant called "Nero's." I moved to northeast Ohio in 1980. Imagine my dismay when I discovered that the nearest chili place was a Skline outpost 30 some miles from home (luckily next to a Sam Ash which made the trip excusable). Now there is one a short drive away. For burgers, in this neck of the woods though, the name is Swensons.

I always get the SuperSonic cheeseburger with mustard and add bacon and jalepenos. Add some tater tots, and be sure to get one of their limeades and your set

First a Sonic story and then my burger rankings.
Took my wife TODAY to Sonic for lunch. Sitting here drinking my Sonic Diet Dr. Pepper as I type this.
We both got the breaded chicken club toaster sandwich (bread is Texas-style toast). She had fries. I had tater tots. All was very good. Tater tots were a little too salty for my taste toward the end, so perhaps I'll get onion rings next time. Will take the kids there for ice cream soon. They've never been to a drive-in, so that will be something new for them.
Now for the burger rankings (but I don't generally eat beef anymore, but I will stop and get a Double Double from my #1 below when I'm out west again):
1) In-N-Out. Only in Nevada, California and Arizona I believe. AWESOME hamburgers. The best chain burgers for sure.
2) Kewpee Hamburgers -- Once a chain of 200, there are now just 5 left. 3 in Lima, OH, one in Lansing, MI, and one in Racine, WI. I used to get them when in college in the town of Kenton between my school and my parents house. GREAT.
3) Ruby Tuesday. They have some nice burgers, AND you can get them with ground turkey if you want.
4) Burger King -- Whopper with Cheese. Great.
5) McDonald's -- McDonald's is only this high because I worked there as a high school kid, and they were GREAT right off the grill. As a paying customer, I'd drop them down to about #9. Big Macs and Quarter Pounders with cheese right off the grill are amazing, especially if you made it with your own love and care.
6) Jack-In-The-Box -- Ultimate cheeseburger is great.
7) Rally's (Checker's in the south) -- Big Buford is very good. Cheap too.
8) Wendy's -- Single or Double with cheese.
9) White Castle -- Sliders. Have to be in the mood for them, but they are good when you are.
10) Hardee's -- Nothing special.
11) Carl's Jr. -- Hate the burgers there. Had to add 11 because I forgot about Jack-In-The Box and had to add it later. Hardee's and Carl's Jr. are related anyway.
Honorable mention of a place long gone -- Burger Chef. I loved that place as a kid.
I've not yet had a BURGER at Sonic. Also, a buddy of mine who used to live in the south swears by Whataburger as the best.

My wife and I ate at Sonic yesterday... one of our fav fast food places. Not only is the food good but they have a much wider variety than most fast food. Burgers and conies are excellent, tater tots are much better than fries, drinks are very innovative. Their fruit slushes are great for driving because they last so long... the ice melts slowly creating a new drink all the time. Way good food at reasonable prices.

I like Sonic's ice cream and fancy drinks, but I don't go there much. To me the food is not that compelling.
There are a few fast food places I like the food (In and Out-Pollo Loco-Churches). Otherwise I want it fast. Sonic is a little slow for me.
If your going I suggest in the spirit of this forum to have some killer music going in the car....maybe elevate the taste of that young punk next to you playing Rap. GREAT FUN!!

I usually get the Supersonic with tater tots, too. really a good burger. WhatABurger is right up there with sonic. Very similar approach. I like Ruby tuesday's burgers, and Appleby's has a nice selection as well.
Best locally is a little place called Burger Inn. One Saturday a month it has live music - the owner doing a power single on his Kurzweil. Place is cash only.
Worst burger - Checkers. They've got this funny taste that is nausiating. Plus, just the other day a guy walked into the Men's room at a Checkers in Sanford FL, and found that the burger buns were stored in the Men's room. When he said something about it, the manager kicked the guy out. The guy called the health department, and the restaurant was cited for 12 violations.

+2 for the chili cheese coney.
When I lived in Texas you couldn't throw a rock without hitting a Sonic drive-in, a Whataburger, or a Jack In The Box. (My car antenna always has a Jack-ball on it.) All 3 are fun places. When I grew up in Florida in the early 70's White Castle was the place to go. Now I live on the west side of Wisconsin and most people have never heard of these places. Panera Bread and Quiznos are nice but they're just not the same. We keep hoping for a Chipotle or Punch's Pizza but at this rate I'll be dead and gone before any of that makes an appearance here.

If I remember my food history, they were served from a hot dog stand but on a hogie roll. But like you say, DB can pop in with the facts.

In NYC, I won't stand in the perpetually long line for a burger at the Shake Shake (Madison Sq Park, 23rd/Madison) though I've heard they are outstanding. An excellent (and relatively inexpensive burger) can be found in the lobby of the Parker Meridien Hotel. I kid you not. Behind a curtain near the check in desk, there is Burger Joint. Inside, it's an intentionally dumpy little place with few seats. Burgers are char-grill fresh to order. All they serve are burgers, fries, shakes, soda, and BEER. And best of all, it's near my NY office.

Sliders are great at 2:00 am on the way home from a gig, when you are drunk. A bonus is that if you are in the city, you usually get an entertaining floor show from all the characters in there.
But Skyline or GoldStar is great anytime.

I have a theory about burgers. It's similar to Yogi Berra's line, "sex is like pizza. When it's good, it's really good. And when it's bad, it's still pretty good."
I always hear people talking about this burger or that one, like Miller's that's a block from my house. My in-laws always volunteer to house sit when we go out of town so they can go to Miller's. There are always poppy seeds on our dining room table when we get back.
To me Miller's is good, but it's not great, drive across town to get one. I prefer a juicy, grilled burger over anything fried, but that's relatively hard to find. I like Whataburger over just about all the chains around here, despite it being fried. But my favorites are in some individual local places that I'm not remembering at the moment!

TOO FUNNY!!
I'm going to write myself a note and keep it in my pocket so that wherever I go, whatever I'm doing, when lunchtime comes around and I pull out my money to see how much I can spend, I'm reminded NEVER to eat at Checkers.
Who in the world wants a hamburger bun that, when it's going in, tastes just like it smells coming out?...
or something.
That's just WRONG.
