Attention Long Island-dwelling LowDowners,
If you’re in the vicinity of Smithtown, NY this coming Saturday, May 10th (and who wouldn’t be, honestly?), you should come to Napper Tandy’s and see me sub with Ants Marching, the acclaimed Dave Matthews tribute band.
Come watch me attempt to project the image of someone who’s actually heard more than three Dave Matthews tunes in his life as I struggle to remember all of your favorite classics onstage in front of a packed crowd of hardcore DMB fanatics! You can’t pass up a veritable schadenfreude piñata like this!
Here are the details:
Saturday 5/10/08 10:30pm: @ Napper Tandy's 15 East Main St | Smithtown, NY | 631-360-0606 | Directions

I will be out and about on LI this weekend, and I am cautiously optomistic I will attend. I am only familiar with 'radio-friendly' Dave Matthews as well, but I'm sure it will be a good time nonetheless

DMB is much better live than recorded (except for Before These Crowded Streets, which I do highly approve of), so I'd bet these guys are worth seeing.

I'd give a kidney to sub for a DMB tribute band, and the other for a Jamiroquai tribute band, then i'd die happy.
Let us know and we WANT some recordings.

While not even close to doing an entire evening of DMB stuff I did play "Where Are You Going" this past weekend at a wedding. Request of the groom for us to learn/play that song and let him sing it to his new bride; we also learned "Love Song" by The Cure for the same reason.
"Where Are You Going" was a fun song to learn and play. Stefan Lessard plays a really cool part that uses a lot of neck real estate. I could seriously get into doing a whole night of that music.
As a side note: the groom at this wedding just happened to be the previous lead singer in the very band that played the wedding. So we knew we weren't getting into a really bad karaoke situation by saying "yes" to learning those songs.

To be honest, I was never a huge DMB fan before I got offered this gig. It has been a gas learning this stuff, though. Many of the tunes are pretty juicy from a rhythm section standpoint...lots of fun licks to cop and I get to play with that burpy Jaco bridge pickup sound for 80% of the evening.

I had a samoyed (big furry white dog..) that loved to sing to Ants Marching, the begining of the first Extreme disc ("Little Girls"???), and the beginning of Jane's Addiction "Caught Stealing".
But that snare drum on Ants would just make him happier than anything except rawhide. Who's a Good Boy!!!!

The intro to "Satellite" makes for a great warm-up if you learn to play it without a position change.

Great show last night. My intent for going out there was to see the BenLoy signature bass, but was not disappointed when I saw the 5 string Lull, very cool. I stayed for about 40 minutes into the first set then I had to leave (the GF was berating me with text messages, riddled with guilt to leave the bar and go see her...grrrr).
Our Lowdown brother-in-arms sounded fantastic, like he was a Dave Matthews follower all his life, very impressive. I think I knew only 1 song from the 5 or 6 I heard, but they all sounded great. Kudos once again, I had a great time.

Rizzo, thanks again for making the long trip to come see us and no worries about bailing. Glad you enjoyed it!
Had a lot of fun playing with these guys and the feeling was mutual. Their regular bassist, Mark Verdino was very kind to think of me as a suitable sub.
I'll be playing with them again in June...I'll keep y'allz posted.

Sorry I couldn't make it - glad it went well. A return engagement is a nice affirmation!
err...or something like that.
