hi,

I'm looking to get some decent yet inexpensive studio monitors for mixing and mastering.

All I have are my computer speakers and they're not cutting it so I would have to say that I need something a step up from those in clarity and frequency response.

My price range is around $150 for a pair of self-powered monitors.

Any suggestions on monitors that are surprisingly good in that price range? I know that you get what you pay for but there has to be some that stand out from the rest right?

Thanks!

"surprisingly good"...

Let me ask you a question:

If I told you I was going to sell you a $75 power amp and a $75 pair of speakers, but it was going to sound "surprisingly good", what would your expectations be?

Does any company(aside from maybe Behringer, and I doubt that even they have that kind of balls) even offer that package at that price for new products? Advice, save your money, and when you get about 3 times that much, start looking.

Your worst enemy is going to be homogenization -- Plenty of speakers in a MUCH higher budget than you're looking at don't distinguish well from "good" sounding recordings to "crappy" sounding recordings. They tend to make pretty much everything sound similar -- Think about gaming speakers... Almost everything you run through them has a pretty similar character. Not a good situation.

You need speakers that are much pickier than most. They need to sound bad if something sounds bad. They need to stay neutral when something sounds good. YOU need to know the difference between them.

I'd argue against looking at much of anything in your price range -- Wharfedale Diamond 8.2's wouldn't be the worst thing you can get -- Cheap as cheap gets, but reasonably consistent.

At this point, I won't get into the demands of a mastering loudspeaker...

The lowest cost monitors I would consider would be the $300/pr KRK Rockit 5's.
