Saturday afternoon and I had a little free time so I went over to the local Guitar Center to see what was new and exciting. Happy to report that there were plenty of "young guns" playing those riffs that all guitar store employees love so much - even heard Crazy Train a few times (no it wasn't me!)
Anyway, 95% of my playing is on a Les Paul Custom but for many years I've wanted to buy a Stat just 'cause I want to. But every time I go into a store and start playing them I end up walking out with buying one. In theory I love Strats and want one badly, but every time I play them I feel that they are very "unfinished" feeling. So after playing a bunch including Made in Mexicos and USAs, rosewood and maple, once again I gravitated back to the Gibsons. Maybe a Strat is like good scotch... I'll need to just plunk down the cash, buy one and play it for some time to "acquire the taste."
Another observation (and I am a Slash fan!)... The EPI Slash Les Paul... Looks good enough on the rack. But not sure if its worth $1000! I played it and it feels like any other Epi Les Paul Standard. I hope the pickups make the difference as i did not play it through an amp.

rw.....a Strat and a Gibby or a Les Paul are sure two different experiences. Different, and both fantastic. Each will give you a feel, and tones that the other will not. Having one of each will cover many bases!!
You owe it to yourself to finally bring one home!! I bet you'll find it's nitch in your tonal spectrum.
Personally, I'd not be without either!!

I was always more "Strat-wired", and still feel their playability and ergonomics surpass other designs, and have found the LP to be an acquired taste, but its tone and snarl are addictive, and the neck doesn't take long to make friends with. If I were limited to just 2 guitars, A Strat and a LP would be my choices.

I guess I'm the odd duck here. I played mostly acoustic... then gradually acquired a taste for a 1986 Ibanez Active H-H.
After that was stolen, I finally got around to looking at electrics again after buying a Korean H-S-H off ebay. The Korean was okay, just nothing special.
I had looked at Strats when I bought the Ibanez in 1987/88, mostly American made, I think, and up to $1,500 if I remember correctly. I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. I thought the action sucked and the tone was... whimpy.
About five or six years ago I tried them again. The Squiers sucked, imho. The MIM's were... adequate, but nothing outrageously good. The Americans nice, but way too expensive. As some of you know... I wound up with a Highway 1 that I thought was really sweet. My opinion is that it was a combination of the quality of manufacture, the american pups (especially the RW/RP Mid) and the nitrocelluous finish.
I played it LOUD through an all tube 50W amp that I had and was in love.
Then I started getting an itch for an LP. Couldn't see the $2k for a Standard... liked the DC, but still a little pricey. I'd pretty much settled on the Godin LG P90 when my life turned ta' crap.
Now I'm getting another 1986 Ibanez H-H and looking at Ibanez Strat styles as a way of getting the sound without the cost.
I guess I'm saying I'm converted to Strats, everyone should own one.
I'd like to have the LP sound, but to me, it's secondary. I'll probably pick up a new Hagstrom D2H or something like that and then I'll have all the basic sounds, imho. Oh... except the semi-hollow body. Hmmmmm... just one more guitar...

A Strat and a LP would be my choices. Outside of my accoustics, that's my arsonal... 1 Strat, 1 LP, 2 hands and 10 fingers... Want more? Yes!!! Need more? No!!! If I can't do it with these I can't do it... But I love my Strat
Thought you had an L6S?

Sorry, Caevan, I have actual factual information documenting that God was NOT playing an ES-345, nor an ES-355.
It was a 335.

the "required" guitars for us mortals?
Acoustic 6-string Acoustic 12-string Strat LP Semi-Hollow
I was almost there at one point.
And a nylon-string, an electric 12-string Rick, a Tele, an 000 sized acoustic (one with a cedar top, one with spruce and one with mahogany).........

The problem with Strats is they let you know exactly how well (or bad) you play. They reveal everything.
