Just curious. I have a chance to purchase a POD X3 Live at a very good price. Just wandering if anyone knows anything about Line 6 gear's tones or how they are about supporting their gear.

I'm a tube amp guy, but I also have a 2X12 Line6 Flextone II combo amp and it is a great amp. Well built, well engineered, convincing modeling and has held up well over time. They make very good products.

I have mixed feelings about Line 6. I used to own the first series FlexTone amp and I loved it. Then they began to tweak the models and they completely screwed up the Mesa Rectifier. I actually owned the first version of the POD (great rectifier model, but screwed up in subsequent versions), the first version of the POD XT and XT Live but ultimately I just got tired of having so many options because I spent hours and hours tweaking my sounds to end up with a mediocre tone for recording direct. I ended up getting a couple of AMT pedals (California Sound, Distortion Station) exclusively for recording direct and I couldn't be more pleased. I just tweaked a few knobs, set a few switches and I have a great direct tone. Overall, I think Line 6 does have some decent products and there no doubt that they completely changed the amp and recording scene with their products.

I love Line 6. POD XT is a revolutionary recording tool. I think the effects are top notch in it as well. The complaints I have with it are that the more distortion you use the more digital it sounds. Really I mainly use 1 model config which is: Plexi Variac through the Tweed 4/10. I find I can get a decent rythm or lead tone from this patch and it even cleans up nicely with my guitar volume.
I think for recording it is very useful if you layer trax. Meaning, use maybe 1 or 2 POD tracks but make sure you have some real micd acoustic or electric amp trax as well. Otherwise it can sound over digital.
I briefly messed with my buddies Amp Farm in his Pro Tools HD and was very impressed with the models which I believe are based on X3 technology.
As for the Line 6 amps, I think they all sound and react like a modeller except the new one. The Line 6/Bogner Spidervalve is one of the coolest amps I have ever owned. It has a tube power section that totally makes the amp play and sound 100% tube. The hi gain sounds are convincing when the amp is loud and the power section is opened up.
It takes alot of tweaking, as the presets are pretty hokey but dialed in correctly this amp could really compete with some of the $1000 + amps out there. When I crank it up and play through it I am always like, "no friggin way!" Few combos have made me do that.
I haven't run it through an extension cab yet but I would imagine it would just keep getting more massive. I mean my 1/12 sounds like a wall of sound when I crank it.

Not to be a smart ass at all here, but how long has it been since you stood out front and hooked into a couple of Marshall cabs with a Marshall 100 watt head, running hot and and just crankin', my point here is, if it's been awhile since you have done that, do it, and reconsider what wall of sound really is

I understand your point Lee, but on a speaker stand cranked this this is a wall of sound. Of course its not a 4/12 but for a combo it really can fill a room and it never sounds small or tinny. I generally don't like things that suck, but I have owned this since dec and I am still blown away at the quality of sound you can get out of it. Through a good 4/12 I have no doubt this thing would sound excellent (loud).

Oh yes and I'm sure it would sound fantastic! Yes I was just saying, that there are wall of sounds and then there is another level and that there is nothing in the world that is like being able to open up full stacks or at least two 4X12 cabinets with 100 watts of tube power, it makes you feel like you have a monster on the end of that guitar cable and the amazing feeling of pushing that much air is something every guitar player should experience.

Yes, and in the 70s I pushed three Marshall 50 watt amps (for their superior tone to the 100 watt versions) rigged by the sound company to preamp a rack of Crowns which powered 10 cabinets, all JBL and Gauss. Custom effects built by the sound company for me. Stupid loud, because JBLs and Gauss PA drivers are designed not to break up, so the Crowns had to be screaming .... yeah, it is pretty impressive, at least to the guy in front of the stacks, but in the long run I found that it had less to do with communication and sharing my music with others than I had originally expected.

I bought the POD about 7 yeas ago and I've upgraded the ROM to version 2.3. This is the best thing I've bought since I bought the Rockman in '82. I have an original 1964 or 1965 JTM-45 Marshall head and cabinet and the POD sounds 99% like it.
I will probably use POD going into the effects loop of my Seymour Duncan tube amp for upcoming gigs. It has all of the effects I will use including the rotary effect for SRV tunes.
A tube amp by itself might sound more authentic (questionable), but when played with a band, nobody is going to be able to tell the difference.

I owned a Flextone II amp, and it was great -- never had a problem, and I thought the sound was better than expected. I recall wishing that the knobs had more of a solid feel to them, but they never failed.

I use a Variax 600 into a POD XT Live all the time now. It's so versatile and the sounds are so useable that I can't see pulling out a less versatile system.

Yeah I hear you. By choice of course I would much rather always play through a 4/12. I used to only use on exclusively.
