#1 - What is the most challenging format you work with: The Metheny Group (large ensemble), the trio stuff (small ensemble), or sideman gigs with other artists?
#2 - As rumour has it, was Zero Tolerance for Silence a poke in the eye to David Geffen at the end of your contract? Or was it the furthest reach of your experimentalism (For the record, either way is totally cool with me )
#3 - New music with Ornette?

1.Pat have you compared any of the newer guitar synthesizers to your older Roland GR-300?
2. Why do you choose that over the newer/older guitar synths, tracking, tone libraries?

I really like Pat's playing. I have never seen him live though and have not YouTubed him either. I suppose I should, being as I have quite a few of his albums.
I would have two questions that come to mind.
1) I seem to recall reading in an interview with you a long time ago, that you studied with a piano player early on which greatly influenced how you approach improvising. Am I correct that this led you to play passages on single strings, moving horizontally along the neck on a single string for some portion of the passage? This as opposed to mostly vertically on the neck moving from string to string within a 4 or 6 fret spread like most people approach it?
2) I also recall reading you saying in an article more recently that you wish more kids were exposed to jazz at an early age and that they just get bombarded with rock and pop etc, words to that effect. However with my own kids and watching their shows on TV with them I find there is a lot of very fine music, played by excellent studio musicians and much of the music is far from rock or pop. Going back to Raymond Scott and on through to today, much cartoon music to me is quite jazzy in nature. Plus what they hear by way of their parents which is not always rock. Do you still feel this way?

Pat, you seem to have found a way to balance respect for (and knowledge of) tradition and creativity. How would you go about teaching that.... in ten words or less....

"Pat, if you could ask Slash some questions in an upcoming issue of GP... " !!
Just kidding, Jude! Seriously-
Could you (Pat Metheney) go into your thoughts on harmony- specifically, choosing and playing chordal/rhythm parts on the guitar, both in settings that emphasize the guitar, and supportive comping?
What are some of your favorite chordal flavors (individual chords, extensions, and fingerings) and moves (chord-to-chord changes, substitutions, etc.)?
Your thoughts on solo guitar, and playing in a group/band setting?
What would you like to hear more of in the playing and music of others, particularly newer and younger guitarists? What would you like to hear less of?
What would you like to see in the "Music Industry"?
Thanks, Jude and Pat!

Dear Pat: How do you do to play 2, 3, 4, 100 times better live than recording in a studio? I saw you in Montevideo (world tour 1995). I love your song "country poem" and I play it always that I have the opportunity. Thanks for your music!

1. On "We Live Here," the Pat Metheny Group incorporated loops on many of the songs, a reflection of the 1990s musical zeitgeist. If you were to choose a musical element reflective of 2008's artistic aesthetic to work into a new PMG record, what would it be -- and why would you want to work with it?
2. Compare your approach to working with Brad Mehldau to your approach to working with Lyle Mays.
3. Any more film scoring on the horizon?

Y'know, Mr. Gold- I kinda think that you aughtta let him (Pat Metheney) view this thread in its entirety as of the time of the interview, and video his perusal and spontaneous responses as well as recording his direct answers (all with his permission, of course). I imagine he'd chuckle at some, comment on others, answer many, and furrow his brow and take a real interest in a few...
That'd be pretty interesting and enjoyable for the members of these forums, I'd think!

It's hard for me to think of questions for Pat Metheny as he is very open and I have read lots of interviews with him. He also used to have alot of discussion on his web site that covered just about anything you would want to know. But I'll take a shot.
You are known primarily as a jazz musician, guitarist and improviser but I think of you as maybe the best composer of our generation. Talk about some of your approaches to composing. Is it improvising and keeping the good parts or is there some sitting down and writing things away from an instrument involved too. Also talk a little about people that have started to play your tunes in a different setting, like Jason Vieaux.

When are you going to record that smooth jazz duo album with Kenny G. ?
I was actually going to suggest, "Can we expect a co-headlining tour with Kenny G this year?"
And if anybody doesn't get the irony, here is why:

It might be nice to let Pat talk a little about the horn and keyboard players he likes, and not exclusively about the guitar; though of course that's the focus of the magazine.

That would be cool indeed.
The latest issue of Guitar Player that I have (Black Crowes cover) has lines from Miles and other non-guitarists, which I think is a good direction to continue exploring. Back in the (jazz) guitar world, I also appreciated the improvising over "So What"/"Impressions" lesson featuring lines from Martino, Carlton, etc.
