AACK...

I'm glad I was mostly out of the loop when a lot of these bands were in vogue. I did like some of the better bands mentioned here. Hmm, no one mentioned Yngwie, hah. Yeah, I enjoyed him, too, even as his opinions on lesser players at the time usually managed to make other people sh*t their pants uncontrollably.

I was all about the thrash metal then. Give me any record by D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies, Metallica (before the black album), Testament, Anthrax, Pantera, Megadeth, Sepultura... not to mention the then underground scenes of death metal and grindcore. When I heard Terrorizer's "World Downfall" LP... blast beats... brutal, mondo distortion... holy F*CK! I wanted to bash the teeth...

Oh, sorry, this is the "hair metal" thread. Hmm, okay then, here's my fave hair band from the 1980's:

It's JEM and the HoloGrams! \:D

Vixen.

Well, I did *like* 'em for about five minutes. They did have some good songs. All of them are still in the biz in various outfits. Jan Kuehnemund (2nd from left) retains the Vixen name, with different members.

+1... not into Sepultura, liked Slayer + or -. Add to that Iron Maiden and some of these guys' side projects, like Grip, Inc or Down. Plus Voivod, others of course....

There's some good knowledge on this thread. I haven't seen the list and I typically hate those kinds of things anyway. I wrote the table of contents to a hair band book for Warner Bros. a few years ago, so I revisited a lot of this stuff. As I said then, every hair band in history owes a debt of gratitude too Van Halen. There could be no Crue, Poison, Cinderella, or Warrant without VH.
As for some of the guitar badasses to come out of this genre, after Sir Edward you have a ton of great players, like DeMartini, Lynch, and John Sykes (totally underrated for his work with Whitesnake and Lizzy). Say what you will about their tunes, Reb Beach and Vito Bratta can both play, and let's not forget about Dave Meniketti and Steve Vai. One dude who doesn't get enough love (and only played in a hair metal band--Vince Neil's--for a short time) is Steve Stevens.

You're right about Steve Stevens, Matt. I always kind of brushed him off as a one-trick pony (his Floyd Rose abusing laser? sound) when he played for Billy Idol. (Strangely enough, 'Rebel Yell' just started playing on the radio as I type this!) His solo CD 'Atomic Playboys' from the late 80's has some very impressive playing on it.

I've got a Steve Stevens story coming out in the July issue about his awesome new record Memory Crash. Stay tuned.

John Sykes and Dave Meniketti are to kick ass players, Dave was a pick every note guy in a sea of hammer on dudes.
i didn't mention Y & T because i don't think they fell totally into the hair metal mold.

If you don't think Into the Fire is a cool tune, then nothing I say is going to change your mind. I have every Lynch era Dokken album and none are bad. Despite the silly, early 80s videos (and EVERY band was new to this back then), what's so bad about Dokken's singing?

All of the hair bands had melodies which is a lot better than most of non-melodic, downtuned crap that passes for Rock today.

Dude, it's his voice. If anyone else were singing for that band, I'd probably dig it. It's Don's voice that makes me hate them.

(edit)

Actually, no, after further review, I'd still hate "Into The Fire" if someone with some balls were singing it, i.e. Bruce Dickinson, Vince Neil, Dee Snider, Sebastian Bach....

And to answer your question, Don sounds like Barry Manilow trying to update his sound for the 80's...

"Hair Metal" is most accurately characterized by the hair metal bands of the 80s,in particular the "second wave" decrobed here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_metal
I never called it "glam rock" though. Some here are thinking hair metal is long hair . Nope ,its got to be long, tall and "teased"!. Motley comes most to mind, and the babes(groupies, ect) from the era were known as "hair bears" in some circles .
The hair bands were immensely popular at the time ( I was 20!) and IMO an important chapter in the history of RocknRoll...

I thought we'd already established that Kiss is not and never was a "Hair Metal" band, and in fact were never even a "metal" band, but rather, much like Aerosmith, a "rock" band that tried to "keep up with the times" by chasing the hair metal trend (Aerosmith was MUCH more successful at it - check the album sales of Permanent Vacation and Pump versus those of Animalize, Asylum, and Hot In The Shade if you need proof)

I'd say that's more of a branch of the early progressive rock that steered towards theatrical elements. Keith Emerson's cape and sword routine type stuff.

I never have liked any of Don's stuff after Lynch left, but I'm with you about the Lynch era Dokken. I've got all of those records too, and still listen to them. I can't think of a single song on any of them that I don't like. Lynch was/is one of the best in that genre, and always had a killer tone.

"All of the hair bands had melodies which is a lot better than most of non-melodic, downtuned crap that passes for Rock today."

Nothing more to say about that!!
