Hi all,

I am shortly going to start building a control room in a space that's 4.88m long, 3.50m wide and 2.46m high. Modecalc shows that there is a pronounced mode in the 70Hz region, because the length is almost exactly twice the height.

The ceiling is an old (1924) lath and plaster job that has seen better days, and a plastering professional has advised me that, if I want to avoid possibly having to empty the room and do further work in the future, I need to screw plasterboard over the old ceiling into the joists, thus holding it up.

I don't want to pull the old ceiling down because it has excellent soundproofing properties compared with modern ceilings (here in the UK at least). However an additional layer of plasterboard would push the height even closer to being exactly half the length of the room. Argh!

What I don't have is judgement about how far away from the exact multiple I need to aim for to keep room colouration to a manageable level.

Basically as I see it I have 2 realistic options:

1.Repair the existing ceiling with scrim tape and hope it holds in the long term (50/50 I'm told!)
2.Add the extra layer of plasterboard

Both ends of the room contain windows that cover about a third of the surfaces. Measuring from one window pane to the other adds a bit to the length (my best guess from memory would be 0.15m)

I would be super-grateful for some advice please!

I'm not a construction guy so I have nothing to offer on that part of your question. As for "how close is too close," you'd like for the modes and mode-multiples to be at least 5 to 10 percent apart. But in a small room it's just as important to have more total room size than a good ratio. So I usually suggest not making a small room even smaller, regardless of how bad the ratio is now. Better to add yet more bass traps.

Hi Ethan, thanks for taking the time to comment. :-)

I'll look further into repairing the ceiling without adding the additional layer.
