We had a hedgehog rummaging in the rubbish a couple of garbage nights ago. Delightful to see that we still have some actual wildlife around the neighbourhood.

NZ's strangely bereft of dangerous wildlife.
On the one hand, you don't have the same bragging rights as you do in Australia where every second critter is "The Most Poisonous ... In The World(tm)"
On the other, it makes life a lot more pleasant, knowing that the North is NOT full of poisonous snakes and crocodiles, the oceans are NOT full of sharks and the garden is NOT full of poisonous spiders.

Yeah, we have the same thing here. Not a poisonous or extra large critter in site. Worst thing we have are the bloody racoons who seem to be smart enough to open and spill any garbage can you can create.
I'm not sure how folks who have to live in and around dangerous creatures all the time, do it. I'd be wearing big boots and carrying a shot gun everywhere I went.

Luckily, there haven't been any of those guys down here for fifty years. When you head a few hours farther north, there are some, but I've never heard of anyone actually seeing one. Of course, there are also small black bears up there as well...

What about the Katipo, Vince????
They're getting kind of rare, to the point that I'd never heard of them before.

That's a long way away from the consciousness Australians have of such spiders as funnelwebs and redbacks.

That's about a 6 footer!!! We ran into one of those in Venice Florida some years back and a Good Ol' Boy on the survey crew got him, skinned him and mounted the skin on a 6 foot 1x12, and he just about fit!!! He took a 2-3 foot slab of white meat, about the heft of a mans arm, out of him for cookin! He said it tastes like..... yeah, chicken!!!!

With all the time I've spent in the woods, I've only encountered a rattle snake once. That rattling noise that they make will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck!! And, it's LOUD!!
I never killed one, but I did eat rattlesnake. It reminded me of pulled pork. It was actually quite good.

They're not as deadly but they can dump alot of hurt on ya'... And their rattle is not loud at all... barely hear it... then there's the Water moccisin... Coral snake, scorpions, brown recluse spiders... OH... And the Carneys that live in Gibsonston. Them suckers scare me more than anything...

I guess I didn't list them all... I've taken a hit from 2 of them. The eastern diamondback and the pygmy... The diamondback swelled my hand up the size of a football...I was pretty sick for a few weeks... I don't mess with them anymore. I like to find them when me and the dog are out in the field but I just watch them... I don't try to pick em up anymore.

Hey Ramp, how about the Coral snakes! Little guys who can kill ya in short order. They are little, so they have to get ya just right, but look cute!!! I used to get them in the skimmer for the pool. We got that rattler in the Winter on a 50 degree day. No rattle, we saw him moving through the field ever so slow. They move for quite a while after they're dead!!!!! I love and miss Florida.

We have timber rattlers here and copperheads. There are some that claim there are water moccisins here - others will dispute it saying they are being mistaken for brown water snakes (which do have a bit of a nasty temperament as well). Brown recluse spiders, small scorpions are also here. But the worst thing that I seem to get bit up every year by are chiggers - never knew what a chigger was until I moved to Tennessee. Not poisonous but that itch from their bite will drive you mad for what seems like weeks!

Spent lots of time with Copperheads.....they are docile compared to rattlers. I've had lunch sitting next to Copperheads sunning on some big boulders.
That Rattler's rattle was audible from over a half mile away.
He was pissed!!!
I was RUNNING!! LOL Yea, I knew he couldn't catch me. I ran ANYWAY!! LMAO
