Decided it was time for a new PA for vocals and bought a Yamaha MG166CX mixer with 2 active Mackie SRM450 speakers. But people on forums have been telling me I should have gone for 1k - 2k watts for audiences of between 50 and 350 (pubs, clubs). We are not a metal, heavy rock, punk or overly loud band and up until now have been using a 300w RMS mono powered mixer, (master & channel volume not even halfway), through two 200w speakers which served vocals well with a backline. So why do they reckon I need such a monstrous system? We don't have a sound engineer.
If I want to mic up 2 guitars, bass & drums, or just drums, won't adding active Mackie subwoofers be sufficient?
My thoughts were: if we perform at a larger venue then surely they will have a FOH system or we hire one and add the cost onto the booking fee.
