Never seen or heard the Matrix systems. The two "work horse" systems that you see for small gigs are the EV and Yorkville systems. Both great sounding, reliable and affordable.

I am NOT a PA expert.
I have heard good things about the Bose system. I actually heard a solo acoustic act last night, and he was using the Bose system. He sounded GREAT.

The Bose PAS is really amazing... but it's also really expensive! If you can afford it the advantages are clear. The most portable system bar none on the planet with clear, powerful sound and the tiniest footprint you'll find. The line array technology that makes it work is precisely what 90% of touring concert systems use, albeit on a scale the Bose could never touch. But that's not what that system is about. It's about a one or two man system or a band using mulitple PAS's, one for each musician.
Two friends of mine own them and I've used them for several concerts at our shul. Believe me, although I didn't want it loud the entertainment did. having, essentially, one point source for the audience greatly reduced my challenges in providing reinforcement in a very live room.
If you can't pony up the $2,500 - $3,000 necessary to use them right then any number of solutions along the lines of the Yami Lee mentioned will work well. Mackie and JBL powered speakers would be good although the all in one of the Yami is tempting.
There is one other system for small gigs well worth looking into. I can't remember the name though! Doh! It was a single floor mounted subwoofer with two tiny satellite tweeters with hemispherical horns. The drivers of the tweeters point up and were bounced sideways by the frame of the box. Weird, puny looking PA but it sounded phenomenal. Only good up to about 300 people in a quiet environment, but for a duo it could be exactly what you want depending on your venues. I wish I could remember the name....

I agree - although the 300 watt one is still REALLY loud.
We actually use 3 of the StagePas 300's in my band we each use one on a stand for FOH and the other as a monitor. For the money and smaller gigs, they're awesome!

Hmmm. In the interest of being "up to date" I should ask. Are the Yorkville and EV systems not used anymore? It has been a while since I've been out there. If they have been replaced, then I really should know so I stop recommending them LOL!

I see EV systems all the time Craig and they sound great. I don't see Yorkville PA's at all, but I have seen Yorkville bass amps quite a bit. I think the Yorkville PA's may be seen in Canada allot because they are a Canadian brand.

It has been promoted by former forum member Lee, too, remember? I have only heard it once, and it must have been user error, because the sound really sucked. Really really sucked.
(side issue... you don't get the same performance from a line array if it is ground-stacked. Probabky doesn't apply to this product, which is designed to sit on the ground, but a point worth noting.)

I'm using a Mackie 808S..1200w with 2 15" speakers with horns on tripods. That's about as small as I can go.
