Why did you opt to do a purpleheart cover for the electronics cavity instead of a continuous backplate? I think it looks rather odd like that.

I wanted the purpleheart to be surrounded by the gold of the Cuban mahogany for contrast in this one. It was just an artistic decision... By definition, an artistic decision will not be universally liked, and that's okay... Boggs

I must've missed the other references to this bass but, wow, the purple heart is nice, and so's the Cuban mahogany. Can you fill me in a little Boggs?

Well, it is chambered Cuban mahogany with bookmatched purpleheart top body design, 35" scale, Hipshot TripleLoc individual bridges which can be strung topside or through the body, solid brass nut, Bartolini MM5 series 'bucker with series/parallel/bridge coil selection and a bubinga/purpleheart laminate Warmoth Gecko neck with ebony fingerboard and SS frets. Did I leave anything out?

Thank you. I'll bet it plays as nice as it looks. I remember checking out your website before, and you've made some really nice instruments. I hope business has been good for you. Jim

Very nice bass!
Really sad that the lighting is so poor and completely washes out the colour on the back of the neck and bass.
You say they're pro shots? If so, find another pro (one who knows something about taking a nice photo).

I'm not dissing your photographer for fun here - you've made a really beautiful bass, and you want photos that show it at it's best. You want that bass to pop right out of the photo. Instead, you've got shots that don't do it justice, and a photographer that can't select the right exposure, or use complimentary lighting.

Uhm... now that you mention it, some of the shots DO look a tad washed out and over exposed. Nothing that a quick tweak with Photoshop wouldn't fix though.

I'd give it to Getz to take the pics. everytime I try to take pics of my bass they all look awfull, but in this case it will be better if you can find a decent one. Like Luke mentioned you want something that will make your bass shine.
If you to Sei bass, you will find bad examples of bass pics, althought their basses are fantastic and those pics don't do them justice.
On the other hand fender has some great pics. and does ritter

In his defense, he was in the middle of doing other work and just fit that in on a rush... I am going to be losing the instrument to the customer very soon. I just wanted something website ready and honestly, converting it to the jpeg format and resizing it is where a significant amount of the detail was lost. It is still way better than anything I would have done and it only cost me a beer.

I'm glad it only cost you a beer but .jpeg conversion and resizing didn't do anything to produce the bland colours and washed out neck we see before us
The photographer did that right before he pressed the button
A real "pro" wouldn't let anyone see images like this, even if they were a quick job for a mate that only cost a beer.

You've got some very nice bass building skills. Make sure you insist the photographer does them justice.

Well, if we are going to comment and critique...
These are much better shots than what you did.
As Luke said, you have some blown highlights. While you cannot completely fix it, a bit of levels adjustment would probably make it look a bit better, probably shifting the gamma left. It would give you a bit more of the deep midtones feel.
I would be interested in what lighting he used. It seems like he has a single light source, and it is over-exposing the gecko, radiating out from there.
All that said, Mr. Fuss did an adequate job for a website. I would not stress over it.

HAHAHA! Forward away... I have another bookmatched purpleheart top and my Cuban mahogany supplier will have no problem getting me premium stuff...
They were only pics for the website and he was under A LOT of pressure with other (paying) jobs out in time, so I did not request creme de la creme work he is capable of. I know he did not light direct. It would represent the instrument far better than I could have. That is all I wanted. Not gallery time and effort... Thanks for all the suggestions though. I really do appreciate it!

Hey Boggs, How does this thing sound? I'm betting it's pretty PHAT with some nice top end as well. (Maybe you can post some sound clips before you ship it?)
Also, how did you go about determining the pick-up location? Did you do a mock up and slide it around to find a sweet spot?
This is far and away my favorite of the instruments you have built.

Very nice! To me, on the left side of the front especially with the pickup and bridge placement it sort of looks like a face. Kind of cool! I hope it sounds as good as it looks.

It sounds really amazing... I looked at some existing 35" scale basses and did some interpolating and selected what I had hoped would be a good location for the pickup and apparently nailed it because it is both articulate and powerful. I do not have a bass rig as I am not a bass player, but I am trying to commission a good one to record some clips before I ship it and I have gotten permission of the customer to do so. The three switch positions are distinctly different, but none are really "out there different" if you know what I mean. Nothing nasal or boomy or anything like that. Just easy to select for a specific vibe you would want for a given song. It really came out better than I could have hoped for seeing as I have never built a bass before this... Like I said before, I am really proud of this one for many reasons... I do want to build another. It's all about having the money to do it. This economy is killing me.

Ok, so I forwarded the link for those pics to the wife . She said "yes, it IS a very pretty bass."
wait for it...
"I guess you can get one"
wait for it...
"If you sell at least two others."
Shot down!
Guess I need to spend half of the tax refund on wine & roses first, then ask again. Or sell a couple thousand copies of our pending cd.

I can't get over how much the front of the bass looks like a face (especially the second pic). The bridge is the mouth, the PUP is the (somewhat broad) nose, and the circular grain provides the eyes.
Nice instrument! Tom
