I currently play an American Tele with noiseless PU's into various overdrives, a rotosphere, trem, into a Hughes & Kettner Puretone. Play mostly clean/glassy with some breakup-- use the OD pedals to get the rest.
The amp is a beast-- it is too loud and too heavy. With a baby on the way, I'd like to sell it off and get a similar sounding amp that needs less volume to sound full, takes up less space; additionally I'd like decent reverb and an effects loop to drive the rotosphere.
I'm looking for something $1K and under (preferably under $800). I've read reviews of the Epiphone Valve Junior, Fender Pro Junior, and Laney VC15. What's your recommendation?

So many amps........so little time...... Dude, you play a fender...mate it with a fender... Blues Jr., Deluxe, DeVille, etc.... There is nothin' like a Fender through a Fender... You wanna' spend one thousand or less?...you got a lot of wiggle room in there... I wish I had that problem... Good luck..

Buy the Fender Pro Jr. and replace the speaker with a G10 Greenback.

Or buy two and get a good stereo reverb (Verbzilla?) to run behind the Rotosphere. Hrmm, that's an option. Though I would love to run the roto in loop.
Yeah, I'm leaning towards the Pro Junior after everything I've read... Will have to playtest to find out for sure.

Buy the Fender Pro Jr. and replace the speaker with a G10 Greenback. Not a bad idea Lee... With the dough he's savin' he could mod that little JR. up nice...

Right, I would buy the amp, rip out the stock speaker, slam the greenback in it and make that little amp come alive, the factory speaker in those make great bases for hanging plants!!

Check out the little Rivera combos...the Pubster or Clubster. I'm thinking about getting the Chubster, but it's going to cost me over a grand.

Good luck.

A Mesa-Boogie Express 5.25 can be had for under $1K. Great tone. 5/25 watt switch, and gain toggles for each channel. here's a youtube demo video. video quality sucks, but audio is decent, and he switches through all options with no pedals.

Yeah, I was thinking that a Mesa might be the right sound for the requirement, but I don't know their models.

Yeah, I was thinking that a Mesa might be the right sound for the requirement, but I don't know their models. Bill I think it will provide tone that a H&K user will feel familiar with and enjoy, while also being something new and fun.
It certainly fits the bill for small with good tone.

I would look at the Line 6/Bogner Spidervalve. Its a great amp. Don't listen to narrow minded people who say it has a modeller in it so it isn't tube. The 12 ax7 pretube feeds a 6L6 tube powersection. It sounds incredible. I think it is a very cool combo and smokes most of the competition. I could sell it to you in 10 min if you were here.
But by all means see what else is out there, I just think the SV is hard to beat in that price range. I have the 1/12 and the speaker is a Vintage 30. It also has a great construction. Real plywood. I can't find any holes in the tone. It sounds and feels 100% tube. But you have to be at band volume for it to sound good cuz it is a tube amp..
