Several months ago we had a short thread on ripping CDs and using a menuing software. On advice of you guys, I've been using Media Player to handle the task of ripping, and I'm finding it to be painless, though as I've chosen to use a higher bit rate, it is taking longer. No big deal.
What is bothering me is the menuing system. Pretty clumsy. And the listings are like, 1986 software.... Bob Dylan is listend in the Bs, and band starting with "THE", like the Rolling Stones, the Beates, etc are all listed under "T"...
so, anyone using a smarter, more flexible software? One that can read my library of already ripped tunes, and give me some handling/managing options?
Bill

iTunes seems to be a little more intelligent, regarding "The" but has the same problem with Bob Dylan etc.

I have a Microsoft 80 gig Zune as my media player, so I primarily use that, however I recommend all of the following media players: * Songbird -Nice because of an integrated web browser that allows you to easily take advantage of media. Nice UI. The only drawback is it is still in early development stages, so there are couple bugs. * Foobar - Simplicity is the essence of this player. * Creative Mediasource 5 - I have always loved this player because it has a library view, and an explorer view. It has great audio support, including 5.1 surround sound audio files, DVD audio, and EAX. I recommend this the highest.

The overly agressive "I WANT TO OWN YOUR COMPUTER" actions of Apple software keeps me far, far away from putting iTunes on any current computer that I own. I did have it early on... as a member of NARAS, they sent us iTunes access to the songs that were nominated for GRAMMYs so that we could hear and compare tunes with which we were maybe were not so familar. Great idae, but it only lasted one year. But I finally banned QuickTime from my machines, using one of the freeware alternates that does not take over the computer, and I probably won't add any Apple software if I can help it.
As you say, seems that this does not answer my problem, anyway.
I don't know exactly what I expect, but my old Sony 300 disk CD changer allowed me to create playlists and label CDs by style, so that I could tell the machine to play all of the 'jazz' labeled CDs, and it would. I guess that I want to be able to do this on the 'song' level with a computer, and be able to attach several labels, so that "Ballad of the Thin Man" could show up under "Dylan", "Blues", and "Jazz", or wherever I wanted it to show up.
I'd also like a reasonable list, perhaps searchable, perhaps parsable ("Show me all the M through Ts...")
I'm finally intothe "M"s. Then there are the compilations, boxed sets, and Christmas CDs, before I head into the unchartered waters of the custom made CDs that won't be in any database. (sigh...)

You should check out http://www.movieorganizer.com/ for movies. I'm a huge movie buff and have been using this free software to organize my movies for years. It can fill in all the info for you from IMDB and has lots of extra info like who a movie is lent to or where it is located (in a box in your storage closet, on a shelf etc.). You can rate the movies, record their quality etc.
Amazing program for movies and it's free. Plus, they update it about once a year. Highly recommended.
On the same note, for organizing backup CDs or DVDs, grab a copy of Catfish, another great free progam. http://www.equi4.com/catfish/index.html
What I do is, keep adding files to my second drive until I have 4.5Gigs worth, then I burn them to a DVD and name the DVD "disk1". I pop it into the drive and let catfish scan it (takes about 2 seconds). Then it keeps the library listed as disk1. The next time I burn a disk, I call it "disk2" and so forth. Then, if I ever need to find a file, I type it's name in and Catfish tells me which DVD it's on. I grab the DVD with that number and I'm good to go.
Bill, I used to have a good program for organizing music...I'll dig around and see if I can find it for you.

Thanks for the tips.
Craig, are you an old B&W movie fan? I'd like to come across some of the old detective movies, like the Raymond Chandler/Dashell Hammet stuff, and the screwball comedies. The old gangster films are kinda cool too.
I'm also a fan of the off-beat, like The President's Analyst, In Like Flint, Our Man Flint, the various Matt Helm movies, and TV shows like "'Allo, 'Allo", the Prisoner, and the Avengers.
I just haven't really gotten to heavilly into DVDs, and I figure to find some on line sites where for cheap or free I can watch them stream... I have no longer any desire to own everything on the planet!

just curious if your using Windows Media Player 11. the stock skin for it is like black metallic with blue buttons.
anyways, if im reading your post right there are some things to try:
with 11, there is the lists of what you ant to vie on the left of the screen (Artists, Album, songs, genre, etc) if you click one of those it will split them up into different catagories.
Also you can make a custom playlist by going to the create playlist tab above that and right clicking on songs to add them.
or you could search for say (acoustic) or (dylan) and if you have stuff labled as an acoustic genre or its in the name of the songs, it will find it.
not sure if thats what your wanting

The President's Analyst is one cool film. Is the soundtrack any good?
I mean, I remember really really liking the song about changes that the hippy sings as the spies all kill each other in that field but I wonder if it's still a good song. And yeah, the Flint series was great fun, far and away the best of all those Bond parodies that littered the 60s.
Not sure about Matt Helm, I remember starting to watch one on TV once (it was so long ago that it was on the Sunday night prime time slot!) and got sick of how disparaging the character (and the movie) was towards rock and guys with long hair. Oh well, Matt Helm will never be on prime time again, and rock is still with us. w00t.

Well, at one point he walks into a club, and the band playing is Dino, Desi, and Billy. Dino is his son. And the gag is that Dino calls Dean 'Dad' and all the usual word gags. It was a sendup.
I like the bit where he'ws trying to neck with the beautiful girl,a nd he puts on a Dean Martin record.... and she's cold. And a Frank Sinatra record comes on, and she gets all hot. But he can't deal. There are a lot of jokes that may not translate today, because the background is lost.

That IS cool, I haven't seen the film since long before I would have known who Barry McGuire was and never thought it might have been a cameo.
