Hello Music Geniuses!

Here a question for Cat Owners.. I just got a new kitten from the resuce shelter but I have chords all over the place that I don't want him chewing on e.g. plugs, computer cables etc... What do you guys do to prevent cats from chewing on electrical chords?

Thanks,

Shari

LOL Just kidding. You could try putting the cords in some sort of conduit? or maybe bag and tape? unless he likes to play with bags, then that won't work. But I'm sure there's some great ideas awaiting to pop up. \:\)

Put the chords away...or keep the cat away. \:\)

Well, I've never seen our cats take much of an interest in power or PC cords, simply because the cords don't move. Cats only take an interest in things if they are moving or if the cats can move them themselves (ie small balls, plastic bags, etc).

The main exception I can think of is if something is sticking out and they can chew on it (twist ties are a good example) Otherwise they leave cords pretty much alone.

With guitar cords it's not a problem either because cats tend to dislike loud noise and it's unlikely that they'd feel confident enough to play with an electric guitar cord while you're using it.

I think the bigger risk is of a cat knocking over a guitar by running into it or whatever.

I never had much of a problem either... but I didn't give them access to the guitar cables unless I was there to shoo them away. I have 4 cats and have had 6 cats for most of the past 10 years, several of them for up to 15.

Give them something more interesting to play with while you are playing.

Otherwise, the best idea is to sheath cables in plastic cable organizing tubes. They're cut to allow you to add cables to the piping. Great stuff for cable organizing.

I've never known a cat to chew on cables, but if you are truly concerned, I'd recommend those hard plastic cable covers, used for organizing computer cables. Sort of like plastic tubes that snap open and closed lengthwise, so you can put the cables in.

Other then that, I'd say give the cat lots of toys and a good scratching post. Keep him occupied with "cat stuff" and he'll most likely take no interest in your stuff.

Hey, I've had problems with that BIGTIME!! \:\( \:D

My cat is only interested in the little DC power cords, the little skinny ones.
She doesn't bother a normal size AC cord.
But those little DC adaptors are usally $20+ dollars to replace.

My answer to this problem?
KEEP THEM OUT OF THAT ROOM....PERIOD! \:D

My little cat is SO SNEAKY, she could sneak the Crisco out of a biscuit....WITHOUT breaking the crust. \:D

Keep'em out, it's the only way.

Hiya Shari, these are great solutions, but I have found the ultimate answer. Buy a PVC pipe about 1ft. long and a 3in. diameter, put the cat in the tube and tape up both ends with very strong tape, no more kitty problems!!! \:\)

I was going to say plug an extension chord into every outlet in the house and wait for him to chew on one .....with video camera handy of course for the comedic aspect of it.

A nice sharp jolt will discourage him from ever chewing on a cable again. \:\)

Just kidding............kinda..............just a little............

my cat will eat anything, so i have just kept him out of my gear room. if it makes a crinkly noise, its food, as far as he is concerned. those wrappers on CDs, cellophane, bread packaging, and old guitar strings are all his favorite foods. one time i left out a steak of swordfish on the counter, and the bag it came in next to it. he jumped up on the counter, ignored the swordfish, and started to gnaw away at the bag.

You could remove its teeth. That way it can just gum away ant anything it fancies... ;\)

Or yeah, PVC pipe should do the trick.

Awwww, you guys are mean; here's whatcha just might get if yer too mean to cats like that: ;\)

__________

I think that the protective and preventative measures mentioned above in previous posts are all good ideas, covering the cords and keeping the cats away from them as much as possible...

Personally, I've never had any problems with cats chewing or clawing any of my cords or other gear; but, years ago my Mom and Dad's dog, Princess, chewed up a couple of short patch-cords of mine, though (and that was very uncharacteristic of her). I think she was missing me when I'd moved away and feeling cranky about my being gone for so long at a time. Or, maybe they were just oowie-chewie-good... \:D

You guys are too tough on cats. The trick to get a good one is colour and sex; Preferably a black and white or an orange tabby and absolutely a male. Make sure it's an indoor only cat and you'll have a great pet. Break those rules and it's a crap shoot as to what you will get.

My cats are smart as hell.
All you have to do is watch them.
They have a great memory and will pull their tricks on you right when you least expect it. \:D

My big cat will follow me around when I get home until I make it to the LaZboy chair and then she has to sit next to me.

She's a loyal friend and all she wants is to be near you.
Hell, you can't beat that. \:D
