O/T - Cats & Cords (cables)

Hello Music Geniuses!
Here a question for Cat Owners.. I just got a new kitten from the resuce shelter but I have chords all over the place that I don't want him chewing on e.g. plugs, computer cables etc... What do you guys do to prevent cats from chewing on electrical chords?

LOL Just kidding. You could try putting the cords in some sort of conduit? or maybe bag and tape? unless he likes to play with bags, then that won't work. But I'm sure there's some great ideas awaiting to pop up.

our cat was never really interested in cords. but he loves plastic grocery bags and string.

Well, I've never seen our cats take much of an interest in power or PC cords, simply because the cords don't move. Cats only take an interest in things if they are moving or if the cats can move them themselves (ie small balls, plastic bags, etc).
The main exception I can think of is if something is sticking out and they can chew on it (twist ties are a good example) Otherwise they leave cords pretty much alone.
With guitar cords it's not a problem either because cats tend to dislike loud noise and it's unlikely that they'd feel confident enough to play with an electric guitar cord while you're using it.
I think the bigger risk is of a cat knocking over a guitar by running into it or whatever.

I never had much of a problem either... but I didn't give them access to the guitar cables unless I was there to shoo them away. I have 4 cats and have had 6 cats for most of the past 10 years, several of them for up to 15.
Give them something more interesting to play with while you are playing.
Otherwise, the best idea is to sheath cables in plastic cable organizing tubes. They're cut to allow you to add cables to the piping. Great stuff for cable organizing.

I've never known a cat to chew on cables, but if you are truly concerned, I'd recommend those hard plastic cable covers, used for organizing computer cables. Sort of like plastic tubes that snap open and closed lengthwise, so you can put the cables in.
Other then that, I'd say give the cat lots of toys and a good scratching post. Keep him occupied with "cat stuff" and he'll most likely take no interest in your stuff.

 Thanks guys! I think i'll probaby get that pvc pipe type chord covers & place the chords up over her reach.

I was going to say plug an extension chord into every outlet in the house and wait for him to chew on one  .....with video camera handy of course for the comedic aspect of it.
A nice sharp jolt will discourage him from ever chewing on a cable again.
Just kidding............kinda..............just a little............

my cat will eat anything, so i have just kept him out of my gear room. if it makes a crinkly noise, its food, as far as he is concerned. those wrappers on CDs, cellophane, bread packaging, and old guitar strings are all his favorite foods. one time i left out a steak of swordfish on the counter, and the bag it came in next to it. he jumped up on the counter, ignored the swordfish, and started to gnaw away at the bag.

You could remove its teeth. That way it can just gum away ant anything it fancies...  Or yeah, PVC pipe should do the trick.

You guys are too tough on cats. The trick to get a good one is colour and sex; Preferably a black and white or an orange tabby and absolutely a male. Make sure it's an indoor only cat and you'll have a great pet. Break those rules and it's a crap shoot as to what you will get.

Hiya Shari, these are great solutions, but I have found the ultimate answer. Buy a PVC pipe about 1ft. long and a 3in. diameter, put the cat in the tube and tape up both ends with very strong tape, no more kitty problems!!! good luck getting my cat to fit in there.. maybe a leg will fit
