Does anyone here have one of these, the Rode NT2-A? Wondering what the feeling is about these...I am thinking along the lines of getting a better setup for recording acoustic guitar. Obviously I am strapped as always so budget is a concern....no 414 or 87 in my future.

I have an NTK from Rode. Love it. Also have the NT-5 matched pair. Love that, too. But that's as close as I can come.

Somebody listed a C414 in LA Craigslist last week for $400. I've seen others there for $450, so it may be possible to do a 414 after all. 87's are routinely more like $1800 used.

I have the NT1-A which I bought used for like $130. I think it's awesome except it's a bit too bright.... maybe a bit harsh on the top end? I'm no recording pro and it could be the preamps on my cheap Tascam stand-alone digital multitracker, but many people seem to notice that. NT2-A is supposed to be better so I'm guessing it wouldn't have that problem.

Wow Scott, I didn't know used 414's could go for that. I'll be eyeing them in the next few months, thanks for the tip.

There is an old 414 with a mod on the Los Angeles Craig's List going for $1900.

Supposedly the new Rode capsule's address the top brightness. The graph is very flat with a slight lift at 10K...they say it is not bright but just adds a little presence up there.

I would like to hear what actual users say. I was hoping to find some here, considering this is a lower priced mic, the type of mic project studio guys might use.

Thanks Millo.

Lotsa good deals there. I've picked up several Neumanns & AKGs. Got a $4500 Neumann M149 tube mic for just $2500. Good as new, & the guy even brought it over to my studio. I'm a total Craigslist fan, although I'm sure there's a bigger selection of stuff here in the LA list than in some of the smaller cities. Anyway, check it out. Seems like a buyer's market these days. Lot of people are dumping gear.

Yeah...I'm sensing the same thing.
I peruse eBay quite regularly and I am seeing all kinds of gear going for low prices...more so than usual.
Of course...there are some select items that are holding steady and even going up in price.

I think the rising gas prices and general heightened concern about the economy has many people selling off toys and excess gear where otherwise they might just hold on to it.
But hey…I’m doing my part to stimulate the economy by giving in to all the GAS attacks that have come over me the last few months! ;\)
I wish I lived in the LA area just for a few months…long enough to buy some of the abundant “large” studio gear that is always up for sale.
Seems like every time I see a 24-track deck or some sweet high-end console going for cheap…it’s always in California…and they refuse to ship! \:\(

Fumbly…check out the ADK mics.

http://www.adkmic.com

They have a few models that will be great for acoustics…like the TC and TL models...and they are not that expensive.
I often see brand news ones on eBay from some dealers.

I really love my TT/CE...exceptional vocal mic.

Thanks Miro...the Hamburg looks good but $1000...yikes!! I wonder why they do not post the graphs....I could not find them.

Well if so many foreclosures are happening, it seems natural the toys will go away first. Strange when really good mics get sold. You would think them almost bread and butter to an engineer or studio. Good score for you though Scott. How does it sound?

It sounds expensive. Seriously. I mean it is rich, full, amazingly detailed. It is NOT what people think of when they imagine a "tube" sound. This is not overtly "warm", as in soft on the highs & boosted in the low end, nor mildly distorty. It is accurate, natural, a bit on the bright side, not particularly over reaching in the low end. It is physically big & it sounds big. It is not always my first choice. Often times I grab a U87 (more colored) or TLM193 (more neutral) first, but it is very dependent on the job at hand. The M149 is what I pull out of the mic cabinet when I'm recording cello or male vocals.

Oh, and it impresses the hell out of people.

Mmmmm...I think you may be looking at the "Custom Shop" version.
Where did you see the $1K price tag?

They sell the basic "Audiophile Series" Hamburg or Vienna for about $300-$350 each...matched pairs for about $700. And there have been a few versions of both mics.

But I don't think the Hamburg would be the ticket for acoustic guitar.
IMO…either the TC or TL (or TT/CE) would be a better choice.

The TC goes for about $600...I think the TL is about the same...and the TT is about $1000….the CE is about $1500 (I was lucky to get my CE for only $1050 from Full Compass).

Here's a whole bunch on eBay:
http://instruments.search.ebay.com/adk_Musical-Instruments_W0QQ_trksidZm37QQfromZR40QQsacatZ619

And there is a used TL for only $325:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ADK-TL-condenser-mic...1QQcmdZViewItem

Oh...ADK use to have graphs, but it looks like the redesigned their website and lost them....

GT 50, 57 and Blue "Joe" are around the same price range as well... I wouldn't have a clue whether they're around the same type of quality or if they'd be good for your applications.
