Did the early Stratocasters (1953-1959 lets say) use Swamp Ash or Alder?

Both. Ash for sunburst and alder for opaque colors.

Yeah. I think Strats were only offered in suburst for the first couple of years. Might be wrong. More colors were added in the late 50s. Was seafoam even offered as a color in the 50s? I think that was a 60s color.
