I found this flyer and thought I might look into this day camp that is nearby. Hopefully, the money will be well spent. What do you think? The price is $375.00 for 5 days.

Fiddle and Strings Day Camp

I've also thought that maybe the money would be put to better use if I saved it for an amp.

On the other hand, I also feel that whether I spend it on a day camp or put it towards equipment, it is an investment in myself.

Looks pretty cool and like a fun time! For me, personally, thinking back to my early days of learning the guitar, I would have saved for the amp...but that's just me. Either one seems like a good investment, really. You have an opportunity to meet some accomplished musicians and will be hanging with others who share your interest in the guitar and music. It could be a really wonderful and inspirational experience that you take with you! Keep us posted if you decide to go!

I figure that there would be worse ways to spend my vacation time and money! I'm hoping that this camp will help me ramp up my skills somewhat.

They must have changed the page, the one I can see if I click on the link is all about the violin?

If you scroll down, they talk about the guitar teacher, Max Cohen. The schedule is pretty much the same for all classes. My only problem is that I don't have a laptop, but it would be interesting to learn about audio editing.

Ohhh... ok, I see it now. \:\)

Sounds very bluegrassy? If you're tossing up between the camp and and an amp (hey, that rhymes!) mightn't it make more sense to find a camp with a more electric slant? Just asking, for the sake of it.

re: audio editing. It's not THAT complex. I bought a copy of CuBase VST from amazon some time ago and was recording stuff that same evening. If the guy can answer some basic questions to get you started, you'll probably pick it up in no time.

Looks pretty top heavy on fiddle players too me. I saw Max Cohen is doing some lessons but unless you are a advanced beginner? I'm not so sure you will be able to stay with the pace in that kind of lesson context? You might want to wait a year and keep working on your chops before spending the money this year.

Well, Lee, my impression is that week 2 is the week for adult novice to intermediate guitar player. I don't know which I am yet -- some days I feel like an absolute beginner! I don't know what ASTA is or what skill level you have to be at the levels mentioned in the brochure.

One thought that had occurred to me is that I could attend the Old Songs festival in June. If I liked what they were doing there, then I could see if they had any openings for their camp. Sort of a try before you buy kind of thing.

I did talk to a guitar player today who happens to know the people who run this camp. He said to me that the camp is a bit pricey and that I would basically be paying for a name teacher to teach there. However, he did know someone who went there (a banjo player) and said that this person's skills improved a great deal after attending.
