(in your opinion)

Who are The Great "Rhythm" Guitar Players?

You know, the ones who hold everything down
and play in such a way where you don't even know they
are there but if they drop out the whole song is gone.

Gotta second Pete and Keith as two of the greatest song writers as well as dead on rhythm plyers.

How about Chet Atkins, Danny Gatton, And Jimmy Page!!!!!!!!!!

OK revised list. EVH, Billy Gibbons, Joe Walsh, Alex Lifeson, SRV, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Michael Angelo Batio (just kidding), Jimmy Page (even though he is sloppy on some stuff)

Also one thing I think makes someone a better rythm player is being in a 1 guitar band. You have to constantly weave in and out of solo and rythm. Thats why Joe Walsh is up there highly.

Of course I am only using rock players. I am sure there are a million jazz guys who can hold down the fort for whatever music they are playing.

Me? <just kidding> ..... I'm not even good enough to hold the spare guitar for any of the guys mentioned here.

PS: And I too agree that rhythm guitarist are greatly under-rated. Also, for some reason it... "bothers"... me that those who also play lead / solo have been included. But, I do understand why. Just a personal hang-up I guess.

Dave, I agree with your comment regarding rhythm guitar players.

In fact, I saw a guitar special last year that had a section about rhythm guitar playing. Tom Petty stated that he was pretty proud of the fact that he is a good rhythm player because "no one aspires to be a good rhythm player. That went out in the 1970s, but it's a handy thing to know."

On the same special, Radney Foster and Emmylou Harris also stated the importance of rhythm guitarists. I think it was also Emmylou that said she admired Phil Everly and Keith Richards.

Anyway, I went to Wikipedia to see their list of rhythm guitarists. Made me feel kind of out of it as I have never heard of some of the names on the list: Wiki list of Rhythm Guitarists

Well, not to sound too cynical, but if you don't like Wiki's list, it's easy enough to change it. I think it's a silly list anyway. They claim it's a list of "significant" rhythm guitarists. Significant in which sense? And to whom? Does anyone really think much about the dude from Devo as a rhythm guitatist? Bryan Adams, anyone? Yeah, 'tis a silly list.

Duhhhh... yeah, it would seem so.

I'm still very proud of my grandfather (a professional musician, schooled at University of Syacuse, teacher of all wind instruments, brass and reed) telling me that I had a good sense of the time of a piece of music when he (very UNsuccessfully) tried to teach me the Coronet.

I didn't recognize MOST of the names of the BANDS, never mind the rhythm guitarist!

I did agree with the few I recognized however.

I did find one thing about that list very interesting though. Of the bands that I did know pretty well, I never heard of a great many of the rhythm guitarist. And that's a shame... on me.

Kramer, well, that's true of any of these generic sites that know little about the subject matter.

It kind of gets my interest up as to what would happen if person "A" deleted a person from the list, the person "B" put it back on and so forth...

...ad infinitum.

Well, it's as they say: "This list is incomplete. You can help by expanding it." I really don't believe in lists either because usually my favorites rarely ever make anyone else's list. I like who I like and no list is going to change that. I was just using the list as a springboard for conversation.

I did see an interesting quote on the discussions page of Wiki, though:

 Quote:
Now someone added Brian Jones, so both Brian Jones and Keith Richards are on the list, that's both guitarists of the Rolling Stones, folks, they can't both be the rhythm guitarist because that would mean there is no lead guitarist. It's more accurate to put both of them on the list of lead guitarists, because they took turns on lead guitar. Just because a guitarist plays rhythm guitar sometimes does not make him a rhythm guitarist. A rhythm guitarist is someone whose predominant role in a band is rhythm guitarist and who rarely if ever solos. For example, John Lennon played a small handful of solos in the Beatles, but he was predominantly the rhythm guitarist; he played probably less than 5 solos in their entire recording career. So he would be a rhythm guitarist. I'm not going to keep editing this article, I just hope maybe someone reads these comments and people will stop putting names on the list just to see someone from a band they like on a list and really stop to think if they really qualify as a rhythm guitarist, if that is the definition of what they do

Michelle,

Yeah, I noticed that too. In one other band as well. So much for the "validity" of lists on those types of site.

Back in the day it was common to have specific rhythm guitarists and lead guitarists.....sometimes the lead player would hardly ever play chords, just lead work and often the rhythm guitar player was sort of overlooked because the singer and lead player were usually getting most of the coverage.

I personally have always had the utmost respect for a good rhythm player.....just because they do not have the soloing ability of a lead player does not make them any less a musician and they are equally important to the sound if not more sometimes.

I might add that I do have a problem with players that get hired for the rhythm slot, take the job and then get attitude about it and start demanding more lead work or solo's.....you have to know your place and my deal has always been, "you knew this coming in....YOU took the job!"

I also wanted to say that in the case of a band with no dedicated rhythm player where you have a single guitarist.......well you have to let this player onto a best rhythm guitar player poll also, because they cover it all.

There are so many fine players with excellent rhythm ability. If the idea was to have a poll for players that only do rhythm the title should have said that.

Let's add some Soul and R&B guys, shall we?

Tony Maiden (Rufus)
Al McKay (Earth, Wind and Fire)
Jimmy Nolen (James Brown)-He's the epitomy of a rhythm player

and not quite a "Soul Brother" but quite the eclectic rhythmeister in his own right, Walt Becker (Steely Dan)

Erm, perhaps, but I can't really follow the logic of whoever posted that on Wiki.

If Keef and Brian Jones both took turns at playing lead, then they both took turns at playing rhythm also (while the other guys was playing lead), so it all works out the same.

I mean, what does that guy think Brian Jones did while Keef played lead? Went for a coffee break? And vice versa, too. What does that person think Keef was doing while Brian was on lead? Crossword puzzles? \:D

Frankly I think that whoever posted that to Wiki is showing a fundamental inability to grasp the concept behind the Rolling Stones, where there IS no lead and there IS no rhythm guitar. Rather, there are two guitarists who move in and out of the lead player role.

Sure, it chsnged while Mick Taylor was in the band, but when you consider the Stones' 46 year career, Mick Taylor is a mere eyeblink.

Re: the Wiki quote that a rhythm guitarist is someone who rarely plays lead is THEIR definition... I don't agree with it!

Hendrix was a fabulous rhythm player, and he surely played a lot of lead also.

There is also the question of feel. In bands I've been in, the question of who played lead and who played rhythm depending a lot on whose style fit the tune; it wasn't that either of us was confined to a category!

I second Richie Havens for a great strummer - now there IS an example of someone who didn't play lead, and didn't have to!
