Steve Cropper always comes to mind as the rhythm guitar player to aspire to. I think The Edge does amazing stuff with textures as well.

I had someone ask me once if I played "lead" or "rhythm" guitar, I told them "neither, I just play guitar". My singer introduced me the other night and put me down on our myspace page as the lead guitar player. We had a friendly little argument over that. He's telling me that I am the lead guitarist, I'm telling him that I'm the only guitarist, so I can't be the lead guitarist. Well, we do have one song that he plays acoustic on...but I still don't think that I'm "lead" or "rhythm", I'm the guitarist...period. I enjoy playing the song (rhythm) as much as I do soloing. Hell, some songs don't even need a solo!

Yep - He plays acoustic rhythm on number of Tull tunes ("Aqualung" comes to mind).

I don't think anyone has mentioned Niles Rodgers yet. He is an EXCELLENT rhythm player.

OH ok thanks... I've never seen him play guitar and when I saw them live he just played flute and sweet potato on Aqualung. I'm going to look up a YouTube and maybe he's playing acoustic on one of those vids...

I'm shocked no one has mention James Hetfield. The man basically was (is?) Metallica. He wrote almost every riff they have and to play underneath Kirk Hammett is simply outstanding given how complex some of their time sigs and head banging can be.

Also, I'd like to give honorable mention to Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden. He's the only Maiden member who doesn't notoriously shred away and the man can carry the band for measures upon measures, with some of their songs lasting as long as 9 minutes.

Allan Holdsworth is a great accompanist, although he doesn't do a lot of strumming per se. Also Eric Johnson.

In jazz, Jim Hall is one of the best compers. In his book... I forget the title.. with the cover by Gary Larson.... he said that if rhythm guitar became a lost art, a lot of the fun would go out of playing jazz.

I was looking for this one. James Hetfield is hands down the greatest rythm player of all time. Even if you don't like Metallica or know anything about them, this guy is worth checking out. He was my inspiration to pick up the guitar in the first place so my opinion is obviously biased. So check him out for yourself. His playing is tight, versitile, and always spot on.

And he sings at the same time. Good pick.

I second David Crosby - what he did on those Byrds songs fascinated me. Also Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, who play rhythm just as well as they play lead. And believe it or not, Suzanna Hoffs. Check out the "Return to Bangleonia" DVD; when she's not playing, there's a difference.
