I first read your articles on bass traps years ago.. never got to build any
though. now, I am digging through my files and came across them again.. I
notice in the plans I have that your instructions are for mounting straight
to the existing wall.. what if I want to build free standing boxes? What to
use for the back of the box? something really beefy like 1/2" ply or even
3/4" ply? and what about for mounting the insulation in the box.. can I
just glue the paper side to the 2X2s? and then.. can I just lean them
against the wall at a slight angle so they dont fall over on me?? as to also
help break up the parallel walls?? I was thinking about making them 4' or
6' tall too?? is that going to mess them up? I dont want to do 8' cause
they will be heavy enough as it is and I want to be able to move them about
if I want?? Am I crazy or should this be ok.. I am not trying to create the
ultimate control room here.. just something a little better than the closet
I have now. oh.. and then.. where would you put them first.. behind the speakers? or along the
sides? or in the back of the room? and .. since I am on a roll of picking
your brain.. have you updated the plans at all?? changed any materials?
anything like that since say.. 2000 or so when I first came across this
article??

You can make a back from 3/4 inch plywood or MDF, but I advise against that. If you can't build wood panel traps onto the walls, just use plain rigid fiberglass. That's easier, costs less, and is usually better for smaller rooms anyway.

The following is at the beginning of my wood panel bass traps article, but you'd miss it if you're reading an old printout from years ago:

 Quote:
Please understand that the bass traps described in this article are intended mainly for larger rooms. For rooms smaller than 25 by 15 feet you'll usually do better with broadband bass traps made from thick rigid fiberglass placed in the room corners. This is described in my Acoustics FAQ. Once all of the corners are treated, then it makes sense to consider adding bass traps like these flat on the walls.
