Greetings from cold and little Norway! I am new to the forum and can't tell you how much I really appreciate these kinds of forums! \:\)

I have been producing music for some time now, but haven't really given any thoughts to acoustics, until now. Recently I've been reading alot about acoustics, bass traps, DIY and so on.

So I would like to ask for some help on my two rooms in my appartment, which I will be using as a studio. Hopefully I will get many tips on how to do it right!

I have two bedrooms. I am going to use both of them. One as a listening room where I will do my mixes, and the other for recording vocals, acoustic and electric guitars.

1. One room is smaller than the other. The smaller room is also asymmetric as you can see on the drawing. And after heaving read up on Ethan's site and other places as well, I guess that I should use this room for recording? And use the symmetric and larger room for mixing?

2. If Im going to use Room 2 as a mixing room, which wall should I be facing?

3. Using Room 1 for recording, which wall should the singer be facing?

Im going the DIY way and have come to the conclusion that i should use fiberglass broadband traps for my two rooms. I plan on build them of rockwool and a wooden frame, with some fabric in the front and the rear. (120cm high, 60cm wide and 4 inches thick)

My closets almost reach up to the roof (they stop about 1' from the ceiling)

I am not sure how to handle the part of the rooms with the closets. But in the other side of the room I plan on straddling the corners with basstraps that go from the floor to the ceiling.

4. Where in the rooms should I place the traps?

5. What about the windows and the walls?

6. Should I use any foam?

I know that it's hard to answer on all of this, not beeing in the actual room. So I tried to be as descriptive in the drawing as possible. By the way, the floors are wooden floors, with cement beneath! (I live in an appartment building)

I appreciate any comments anyone would have \:\)

1) Yes.

2) Face the windows on the left. The two closets behind you will make a sort-of QRD bass diffusor.

3) If the room is treated with enough absorption it shouldn't matter which way the singer faces.

4) Bass traps in corners, mid/high frequency absorbers at the first reflection points. I would also stuff fluffy fiberglass in the 1-foot cavity above the closets.

5) What about them? \:D

6) Foam is okay for mid and high frequencies. You really need to read the Forum FAQ linked in the READ THIS FIRST sticky post.

thanks alot for your reply!
Im sorry if i gave the wrong impression, but I did read your whole FAQ, and build better bass traps article. I just wanted to check if I planned out my rooms the right way. And if you had any specific ideas for the rooms since one of the walls is made of concrete, and the others drywall.

and thank you for the idea of filling the cavities above the closets! \:\) I wouldn't have thought of that my self!

again, a silly question, but do you think its hard to make the rooms completely dead? or will it take a lot of effort?

thank you for your time \:\)

Hey icemanaman,
You have a pretty good layout for isolation between the two rooms because of the hallway, you could even install windows on the two opposing doors if wanted to see from from to room.
If you use a room mode calculator you can see that your dimentions are quite favourable as well. http://www.bobgolds.com/Mode/RoomModes.htm

I don't know how difficult it will be, but it's not necessary to make a room completely dead!
