Typos are a problem throughout publishing these days but in recent months there have been some glaring ones in GP.

An article advises keeping string "taught", not taut, when restringing; another comments on the "timber", not timbre, of instruments.
It was with dread that I scanned the recent sidebar on biasing amps (April 08) but how much longer 'til something goes horribly wrong ?!

Yeah, that's the problem with spelling checkers: they can't do much about homophones. And at that point, you really have to decide for yourself whether the spelling checker has made the right call.

Just a guess but having called the GPlayer offices in the past (on totally separate issues) I suspect the may leave text transcribing & proofing to interns.

Dear all...

Thanks for helping us police these errors. The GP staff has accepted more intensive responsibility to do Web news uploads, gather content for various opt-in newsletters, write more features in-house, and so on. I appreciate the staff's willingness to offer more content -- and more timely delivery of that content -- to our readers than ever before. The downside is no added resources have come our way, so proofing time has taken a hit. We are not happy with publishing even tiny errors, so we are all toiling hard to minimize proofing glitches. We do not rely on interns for final proofs -- although Madaline and Katie do help us with reads -- and must accept all responsibility for any boo-boos that make print. Hopefully, we'll get a handle on this soon, and these errors will decrease significantly.

Again, thanks for posting. The critiques do help us clean our house clean.

Best,
Mike

I work as a translator/proofreader and can state, for the record, that typos are EVERYWHERE... even in my posts (lol!).

GP is not perfect, but I don't think that the text is shoddy, liked it was typed by apes, or something..

Personally, I'm more concerned about mistakes in the MUSICAL text.. and yes, they happen, but again, I think that GP does a good job overall.

Certainly the magazine does care about quality in every category, and I think that, while pointing out an error or two is a good thing, we shouldn't forget about the 98% or so of the words and notes that ARE correct!

Editorial opinions? That's another story entirely! (just kidding!)

Catching typos is very important in professional publishing but not on online forums.

The big error of the Holdsworth issue is getting the wrong Carvin guitar in the picture!! We see a new SH550 instead Allan's own signature guitar!! The H2T is mentioned but a guitar I've never seen or heard of him ever playing is in the pic. Now that's worse than a typo!

I take the proofing of GP very seriously but, as Mike said, there simply aren't enough hours in the day to spend the necessary time to get it totally right. For every typo that makes it into your mailbox, we probably caught and fixed 100, but the ones that get by you are the ones that haunt you. (Bill Buckner caught most ground balls that came his way, you know?)
I will, however, redouble my efforts (although I'm not sure I ever doubled them in the first place) and do my utmost to make GP the cleanest guitar mag out there.
Sincerely,
Mat Beckett

Matt and Mike...you guys are doing just fine. Nobody wants these typo to slip thru the cracks. It's inevitable, however.

The mag is great, and you guys should be proud of your work.

Now, get back to proof reading, would ya?

Been away for a couple months...
Just to clarify, my intent was more humorous than anything else...GPlayer has always been & continues to be great.

As some have pointed out (& I did in the first sentence) typos are a general gremlin in publishing; it is frustrating that it has gotten worse, industry-wide, & moreso when particular terms relating to a speciialized subject are mangled.

It IS true that some periodicals are much more careful than others!
