Long ago & far away, in a thread about a pop musician I mentioned another certain pop musician (who was once quite celebrated & esteemed but who has fallen into ill-repute) as being someone who had similar attributes.
I've seldom seen such an outcry of complaint that I might compare the two, although, in fact they seem quite alike to me.
My point here is that I find it increasingly difficult to post such comments or opinions here at Music Player without leading to scoldings that seem to be based on personal opinions about good/bad that seem to take for granted that differing opinions simply cannot exist...
To not coin a phrase, I have to ask, "What is the deal with this provincialism ?!"
When did musicians, once a breed of general free-thinkers &, particularly those who gather at this waterhole, become so ironclad in their certainty that others have no right to differing ideas ?
Is this something that is only bugging me lately or is it something that has happened to you, too ?

I bet this sort of thing has existed forever. You know the old saying, opinions are like a-holes, everyone's got one, and they're all on the internet.

No, you do have a point but I agree with Joe that it's probably been going around forever. People seem to have forgotten the distinction between fact and opinion. I once got kicked out of a mailing list for a band because one of the mod's said that "you can replace the drummer & bass player of any given band without it altering the sound of said band." Being a bass player myself I strongly disagreed, and gave him Metallica as an example that most people will know. He told me to shut it and drop the discussion. I didn't. Nor did I know he was a mod, at first. He called his position, and I became a rule: "there will be no more mention of [me] on this list". First and only time I was considered a troll

Thanks guys, even you Eddie [ ], but I'm particularly peeved by the change in the MPlayer forums over the past few years... ...when I first visited here there was much more openness & actual concern on the part of moderators that members might chase away visitors; now it seems a given that people will just be jerks...& while that's something I can accept in the population at large, I really am getting a bit tired of it here.
A few years ago when some forums & moderators split to Central, there was a great hue & cry about how rambuctious that site was... Quite frankly, I find it less contentious & less "owned" by certain members than here...

For myself, I don't care what your opinion is, but if there happens to be one misspelled word in your posting, man, I am gonna drop on you like a ninja who woke up on the wrong side of the straw mat.

Folks had a right to disagree with you, just as much as you had the right to state your opinion.
Actually I was referring to more than a single incident; for example, someone I generally respect on the KCorner forum recently got quite persistent over whether particular terms had to be used in ways that fit his definitions. In some company, a liking for certain or individual musicians will draw fire.
However, in the thread you mention there were some comments that suggested that the rather mild & deliberately unspecific comment I made was totally outrageous & that "[un-named] is a putz"...so that is an example, but hardly the only one. I'm not re-opening that can.
My feeling is simply that such implacable insistence is not a good thing.

Hmmm...Well, each of the forums here consist of different members and are run by different mods. They are essentially, different forums. Any problems you are having, that spans a few of the forums, is more apt to be a misperception then a degradation of morals or standards of said forums.
Of course it is possible that someone is being a little overly sensitive...

Jesus Christ, man, get over yourself already.
Did a mod lock your thread because he didn't like your opinion?
Did Jim PM you with a warning that further discussion of a given topic would result in suspension?
Did anyone tell you to leave because of your opinion?
If the answer to the above questions is "no", then I politely suggest that you need to re-examine the reality of bulletin board interaction, and how exactly you, the individual, perceive the manner of discussion contained within them.

note the diff between early & later replies.
From when?
The fact is, if you make a statement that is contrary to the popular opinion, you can expect folks to disagree and for there to be some degree of argumentation. I don't think this is a stretch, but more likely, just human nature.

I dunno, CB, comments like this... Hay E yer gettin outta the pecking order. Go pedal your opionions somewheres else! ...just re-infoce my observation. I know that there's a sense of humour behind some commentary but can you really deny that some members might misplace the emphasis in the idea of a "clubhouse"... I'm not on a campaign nor am I gonna make much more of this but note the diff between early & later replies.
Maybe I was being too subtle (moi?) but I was actually mocking a couple of other threads & posters on the GP forum with my post. Guess you had to have read the originals to get it. Just goes to show that e-lingo is so easily misinterpretted, especially emphasis and sarcasm and whatnot.
Have a nice day!
(can't misinterpret that, can you?)

Did Jim PM you with a warning that further discussion of a given topic would result in suspension? I may've expressed it poorly at first but my point was about the tendency of some to get activly outraged, even hostile over some opinions voiced...
Did anyone tell you to leave because of your opinion? Actually, that's been suggested.

FWIW, I know that there will always be some who choose to be argumentative, even angry...I just find it a drag. Sometimes there may be nothing else to say...so let's all have & nice day, though & drop this, unless someone needs to vent some mo'.

I think you have to realize that, the more a persons opinions differers from the public consensus, the stronger the response will be.
For example, a post stating that you're not a big fan of Depeche Mode might go over with less hassle then a statement like "The Beatles Suck!".
What I'm trying to say is, if you walk into a Banjo forum and say that banjos are a really stupid instrument, you're going to raise a few backs...
