I'd love to find some plain strings that are mellower, less brilliant than the usual suspects, but I've been told "dream on, they're all the same - it's only the wound strings that have a variety of tonal characteristics".

True or false?

A month or so of cheese build up on them should mellow them out a bit... It will certainly take the highs off... Just don't change them as often...

I believe the coating found on Elixir plain strings takes a bit of the edge off. It's not dramatic, but there is a difference (at least to me).

Ah yes, wasn't remembering there that that the plains are coated too with the Elixirs.

Any examples of brands or whatever with plain strings that are less bright when new?

Sorry.

It is clear that, from the feel (rubbing your fingers along them), pull (bending notes), and sound of various strings, that they are not identical. But I picked my favorite brands years ago, and seldom stray from them. So I'm not up on current configurations. I'll try something diffrent on occasion, but usually return to those with which I am comfortable.

On an acoustic, I would expect silk and steels to have a little less attack. Maybe the solid strings from a flat wound set or one marked 'jazz' would have less bite on an electric set. Just a guess, though.

I had hoped that might be true, but haven't found it to be the case yet.

Flatwound sets are what got me thinking about this, because you're generally getting duller sounding wound strings in such a set, but bright as usual plain strings, and that can sound pretty imbalanced IMO.

Come by the shul tonight and we can change the strings on my cheap strat. I haven't taken the time to test out the Strings by Aurora coated strings yet. C'mon... it's only a few blocks!

If you do have some time we usually begin playing around 7:30pm as that's when evening services end. Just call me on the cell before 6:40pm or just come by. It won't be a problem if you arrive before we're done praying.

Thanks for the invite Neil! (I PM'd ya).

Are the Aurora plain strings coated?

I've been hitting the likely sites like Tomastik-Infeld etc. and haven't found anyone talking about the sound or manufacture of their plain strings. Just a whole lot of blabbin' on about the wound ones. \:\/
