I'm sure this is another stupid question from me, but, why do you need a control surface? everything is contained within the software and on screen controls I think? Do you have better control of the software with these kind of outboard controllers or mixers? What is the biggest advantage to using these as compared to the on screen mouse controlled software?

.... why do you need a control surface? ...
Some people cannot wrap their heads around mixing with a mouse... they NEED a console on front of them. Some people find that, with a large number of tracks, it is just more convenient to mix on a console. (shrug...)
I've been mixing with a mouse for so long that I don't have a lot of problems with it. I also believe that, if you hear a problem and resond to it, you've obviously missed it, and you need to go back, not grab a fader and fix it from now, since the problem occured back then.
A lot of guys also have problems mixing with a limited number of faders..... for example, when I first bought the Mackie I expected to buy a couple of expanders to put 24 or 32 faders under my fingers at all times. But after using it for a while, I got used to two things... first,it is GREAT not to have a big-assed console in front of you. Second, the Mackie has bank switching switches, which move the faders by 8 at a time, or by a single channel at a time. It is very easy to push a button a couple of times and navigate among a great number of tracks.
Last week I was in our symphony hall, with a Yamaha PM-4000 with hundreds of knobs. Tonight I'll be at the opera, behind a Midas XL-4. I would not want to mix live in any other way. But I really like mixing recordings whle leaning back in a comfy chair between two giant tower mastering monitors with three monitors in front of me, instead of leaning over a big chunk of knobs, most of which I will never touch, and compromising the sound field for the size and shape of the console that I don't need.
Automation is a big part of DAW work. I have not really been very happy with the curves drawn from control surfaces.... they take some getting used to operating and don't quite feel like a regular console. So I still mix mostly with the mouse. But to grab four or five sliders to get a quick rough setup, control suraces can be handy. A nd if you just cannot get away from the idea of a board, then again, they are a better answer than any cheap board and cheap converters.

Well I dont think you NEED one. But at present, I have to move the mouse to each fader for volume or pan adjustment when mixing down, which gets a bit clunky... I could leave it all static or I guess I could automate it (?).. But I just like to do it manually. So with an outboard controller I can fade out a track while fading in another, or fade one out while panning another etc.. I like to have real controls to use with things... It is a little more versatile IMO.

I have both...software mixer and a console. I prefer the console. It's just faster...and unless you have some large ass computer monitors, it's much easier to see the whole board (the whole mix) on a real console than on the small mixer window in your DAW. In one glance I can see my I/O settings, EQ settings, Aux settings, Pan and track assignments, fader settings...and the Master Section settings.

Hey Trucks my old mate....very nice........I like the progressive vibe about it, all the grooves..reggae to acid jazz yeah baby......some Scofield tones in there and I like the 60's vibe bass....cool stuff bro' especially for a first attempt...crikey, I am gonna have to get busy here.....you guys are layin' it DOWN!!!!
I have been looking at the Frontier Alpha Track for a while now. It is only 200 bones and it has a 100mm motorized fader. Huge savings in real estate over even a small mixer or control surface and it is USB so you can take it and work away from the desk as it has a cable........I hate having to roll the chair up to the desk, click on t record and roll back to my playing position.....I use a wireless mouse sometimes but this seems like it would be cool....you can control mute, solo, automation etc etc etc.
I have no problem mixing with the mouse although I do believe fades will be smoother with a fader.....you can always draw them in later and set smoothing.....but a fader could be nice sometimes.
Sounded good mate!

On a fresh listen, I definately seem to love the ol chucking things from left to right thing. Just wait til I get a console, man, it's gonna be the worst/best abuse of the stereo field you ever did hear! lol
easier and better done with timing... delay the right a little, and the sound seems to come from the left, etc.

Gotcha! Hope I didn't come off like a wise guy!
Nope, hope I didn't either.
Trucks, I often find I hear a track completely differently the next day; particularly after I've been working on it for hours.

Yeah, I will hold off on that one for awhile because I know I'm not going to want those kinds of drums right now. I'm going to look at the other packs they have.
