Isn't it odd how attached we get to these instruments? I have a battered old tele parts-o-caster that has been my workhorse for many years. I think I love it mostly because I cobbled it together myself to a place where I think it plays and sounds wonderful.

But I've been playing bass exclusively in bands now for lo, and my tele has languished in the closet. (I still play acoustic.) 1.) That doesn't seem right- this guitar ought to be played and heard; 2.) I could use the cash realized in a sale for something else that I would use. So I came to the decision, sadly, to put my tele up on Ebay. I already sold my Strat a few months ago.

I'm o.k. with the decisicon, it's the right decision, but I am sad. I know that when the auction ends, and I have to pack it up to ship to the winning bidder, a tear or two may even fall, and that will be o.k., too.

I know you all can relate.

It's always hard to part with an old friend like that. Felt a tear well up just from the memories!

Are ya sure ya wanna leave yourself with no electric, Chad? For the amount of cash you'll get for this guitar, which you've bonded with, ya won't to find another quality leftie in the future, should your needs change. Hate to see ya kick yourself down the road.

if there is sentimental value attached to that guitar keep it, because that is more valuable than the money you gain by selling it. having the option of having an electric is always nice, and seeing as it is a lefty, replacement due to regret would be incredibly difficult.

Nah. At the end of the day a parts tele is just a parts tele, and I can always make one just as nice or nicer if I want to.

I understand where you guys are coming from, I really do. Selling it is not about money. I just don't use the guitar, and I don't foresee wanting to use it. In the past 7 years or so my love for playing bass has grown, and my love for playing electric guitar has dwindled. I play fairly well, but it just sounds like quack-quack-quack to me, there's no joy in it. I do still love playing acoustic, and mandolin, and fiddle, along with bass, but electric guitar? No. So stashing it in a case in a closet for "sentimental" reasons seems just selfish to me.

I used to try to teach bass players the groove, and get frustrated when they didn't get it. Then I discovered how satisfying, and joyous, and challenging it is to lay down the groove myself! Though I thought I would, I've never looked back.

So, yeah, when the guitar goes I'll get a little emotional, basically because I'm just a big ol' sissy. But it's the right thing to do.

I tell you I have difficulty selling stuff I don't like anymore when it comes to instruments! \:\(

I sold my 1990 Ibanez RG550 and my Peavey T-40 bass a few years ago. I don't regret selling them because they weren't getting use. I hated the sound of the RG550 and the T-40 was great so long as I stayed off the E-string. I did need money and wasn't trading up to better instruments yet it was hard to take what I could get and move on.

I wish you well. Whatever you do, don't look back. Like you said, you can build or buy a better instrument if you decide you need an electric guitar again.

I might sell my beautiful old Fender Precision bass, which I rarely play, in order to buy a really good electric.

Except my Dad gave it to me, who recently passed away, so it also has SENTIMENTAL value!

I don't know... I've sold off so many pieces of gear that should have been keepers (including a few I had said I'd never sell) that I must be getting immune. Or maybe I'm getting less materialistic as I get older, and as I try to thwart the cultural bent towards materialism in my daughters. Gotta practice what I preach... So if it isn't getting used, it gets sold. Period.

A couple of years ago I traded my old shredder guitar for my Epi LP. I had just picked-up guitar again after a 10 year hiatus and I was having problems setting-up the Floyd Rose trem, so I traded my guitar in for something with stop-bar. I thought it was a mistake to take $200 for it, but I did it anyway (after all, the store had dozens of similar looking Ibanez guitars for less than $500). So imaging the regret I felt when I saw an IDENTICLE blue Ibanez RG-770 sell on da'bay for something like $600. Apparently, the Japanese-made Ibanezes have held their value and I didn't research the market properly before I pulled the trigger. I won't make that mistake again!

If I had it to do over, I would just pay full price for the LP and keep the shredder around until I learn to set-up the trem!

Much to my wife's chagrin, I've never sold a guitar I ever loved. I've sold a few that I never bonded with, but so what? I dread the day, though, that I have to do it. I'd rather pass them on in my will or something.

Well, my auction just ended and I got about 50% again as much as my starting bid was. So that takes some of the sting out... \:D

Yep, gonna play it in church tomorrow as a way to say goodbye before I ship it off. It's my week to do a "special" and I think I'm going to do Son House's version of "John the Revelator." A little blessing on it before it has to go out into the world and maybe play "Enter Sandman" or "Eruption" a million times...
