I also heard that Genny, Schaffers (sp) and Carling Black Label were nasty. My father used to drink those beers. According to some beer drinkers I know, those beers and Utica Club were some of the worst tasting beers they ever had.

Michelle....Genny Creme Ale used to be a decent beer..of course, I was at U. of Rochester and the price was right!! As I recall, Genny Beer was about $1 for a six pack. The Creme Ale was about $1.50. Seriously, we had a Genese brewery in Rochester, and the beer was always fresh, and pretty good. Schaffers was a good hometown brew too...my Dad wasn't much of a beer drinker, but when he had one, it was usually a Schaeffer. Again, back then, it was made at a local brewery, not some big conglomerate brewery.

How'd we get to talkin about beer???

How? who cares how? \:D
Genesee is okay, Rolling Rock is much better in that class of beers.

Strategery started it with the photo of Billy beer \:D .

My uncle used to work for Schaeffers until they closed down the Albany plant in 1972. I remember their tag line used to be "Schaeffer is the one beer to have when you're having more than one".

My father hated Genny cream ale, and draft beers in general. I have no idea what the differences are in beers.

Oddly enough I did some recording yesterday at the home of a religiously-oriented Christian extended family, no one mentioned Easter.

For reasons I can't get into here, there are some Christians in this country who don't celebrate Easter. I have a friend who is one of them, so hearing about the extended family not mentioning Easter doesn't surprise me.

Hey, you won't believe this.

I've got a friend who drinks Schaefer's lite.
Why?
He says no one ever asks to have one. \:D \:D

The kids crack me up. When I asked my 9 year old nephew how much money he got from the Easter egg hunt, the 4 year old nephew piped up and said that the 9 year old got $70.00! I have no idea where he got that number, but it made me laugh.

Oh, and lasagna -- it's whats for dinner at our home on Easter (this year we had stuffed shells though).

I had no idea that the Ten Commandments was on TV this year. I ended up watching the movie "The Lakehouse" with a friend.

Michelle

\:D I can hardly imagine how we used to take my brother-in-law (14 years younger than my wife) or her cousin's kids for the weekend and just bring 'em home afterward. It gave us a tiny look in the window of what lay in store for us when Lilly arrived, but it's that ability to give them back that makes all the difference! \:D

Hope you enjoyed your shells as much as I did the spinach lasagna! It was delicious!

I definitely enjoyed the shells \:\) . My mom made her first attempt at making lamb this Easter. It was okay -- I've had much better lamb in gyros and other Greek dishes. Also, before the kids arrived, I joked with her and said, "You cooked Lamb Chop!". As a kid, I loved Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop.

The kids were a lot of fun, but afterwards I needed to nap. Chasing kids + eating too much carbs + getting about 4 hours sleep the night before = 1 tired aunt!

I forgot to mention that I was up at 12:30 a.m. baking hot cross buns for church. And while they were baking, I turned on the local PBS station only to find out that they were re-running the Lovin' Spoonful special, but with a brand new interview with John Sebastian.

He was talking about his upcoming concert with David Grisman, the mandolinist. I've heard that David puts on a great show. The price of the concert isn't too bad ($29.00), so I might go.

Go! Go!

David Grisman was wonderful on Country Music For Kids back in 1992 and on albums with Jerry Garcia. I'm not a Dead fan, but I'd listen to Garcia with Grisman. Dave rocks!

David and John go way back to when they played in the Even Dozen Jug band together.

There are only two things that might prevent me from going: #1. Most likely I'll be going alone, which normally won't be a problem, but #2. The concert is in Troy, NY at night. I'm not sure, but I think that Troy Music Hall is in a pretty bad area of Troy, NY.

C'mon... adventure! I don't know if it's still around but we went to an amazing Italian restaurant in Troy when we were there for my grandmother's 80th birthday. Of course, that was 1986 so things may have changed a bit. It was the first place anywhere I found cheesecake that rivaled my mother's. Truly, that's saying a lot!

Oh, I dunno...I have this weird thing about safety. I have tickets to see Don McLean at the Egg in Albany in May. I would have no problem going to the Egg by myself (luckily I have friends who are going to that concert), but Troy -- I dunno. My co-worker (the one who said that David Grisman puts on a good show) suggested that I go grab a bite to eat before the show so I could get a space near the theater.

I can't think of the italian restaurant you might be thinking of, but maybe someone at work might. My co-worker was really nice -- he found out I like Jackson Browne and cranked up his IPOD for me!

Grisman is the most inventive mandolin player I've ever heard.

Oh yeah!! "Not for Kids Only"

http://www.amazon.com/Not-Kids-Only-Jerry-Garcia/dp/B000003913

A Deadhead friend got it for us my kids loved it and so did my wife and I. It's all fairly well known folk and popular tunes tunes played extremely well by both. Excellent version of "Teddy Bears Picnic" and Shenandoah" into "Brahms Lullaby". I'm a casual Dead fan, but have to agree that Garcia's acoustic playing with David Grisman is always amazing. There's also a great CD with Garcia, Grisman and bluesgrass picker extraordinaire Tony Rice -"The Pizza Tapes"

Neil, after I posted the above I realized that I have travelled to different states by myself with no fear. The only reason I can think of why I feared going to Troy, NY is that I constantly read about stuff in the newspaper about the happenings there.

So yeah, I think I'll be going to see the concert. It's kind of crazy how my fears can over take me.

As far as cheesecake goes, did your mother ever make pumpkin cheesecake? My mom did for Easter -- yum!

Nope, no pumpkin. Pumpkin is definitely not a "Jewish" flavor. ;\) It's definitely an Easter/Christian kind of thing although pumpkin is certainly kosher (all vegetables are). I don't know why it's so ingrained in Christian culture and avoided in Jewish culture, but that's been my experience.

Her typical is a Cheesecake with cherry or strawberry topping (Plain for me, thanks!) although she makes chocolate chip cheesecake as well.

I don't know much about Troy. We were in the area on our way to the birthday celebration in the Catskills. We stopped because my dad is a Rensselaer alum. He hadn't visited the university... maybe since he graduated. Seemed like a decent town back then but..

I thought it was kind of weird that Mom decided to have pumpkin cheesecake on Easter because pumpkin is normally a "fall" food. Chocolate chip cheesecake sounds good, though -- you can have that anytime!

I'd like to try to eat more seasonally. I just think it's healthier that way. I'm also trying to east more local foods, although I haven't been bold enough to try the 100 mile diet challenge!

The 100 mile diet sounds interesting. Of course in the south that would require eating a whole lot of Southern cooking I just don't enjoy! \:D (For example... you don't have to put meat in every hot vegetable dish! \:D )
