My generic, unacademic reply promises to be boring:
Well, unacademic is good for me. I must be representative of the purpose of this forum.
If I can bother you and the others with a question: do lyrics factor into your take at all? Sometimes? Never? I guess I've always considered the "personal mood" to have already been established. It's just a question of how psychotically you relate.

Sue, in a hurry, I'll just say that lyrics are often important to me (when I do know them, which is not always the case).
For example, I reharmed "You don't know what love is" in a rather dramatic manner, because of the lyrics. I play "All the things you are" and "Everything I love" more or less straight, because I find that in these songs, lyrics, melody and changes work so well together, that there's little need to change anything. The lyrics for "I love you", on the other hand, are so silly that I changed everything, to create a kind of alienating effect. (I kept the melody intact, however; it's just beautiful)
On other songs, however, I just don't consider the lyrics at all. For example, the version of "Easy to love" which I posted here, was done that way because I found the original changes rather simplistic, and the melody lent itself well to a kind of "late Bill Evans" treatment. On "Our love is here to stay", my goal was to obtain a kind of humoristic effect in a rather overplayed piece... and so on.

I liked your voice Sue...it had a cool, hip vibe to it. It reminded me of someone....can't think of her right now. You sounded like you were doing one of those live in the studio NPR broadcasts...very cool. Do some more.

It'd be nice if T. Garvin would stop by sometime. I met him years ago in Richmond when I was doing a gig with some friends of his. He's the stuff. Love that tune "Mitch" of his. Smart dude. He's like Bill Holman or something.

Strangely enough, "Mitch" (the person) actually showed up last night at my gig.
That's cool you spoke with Garvin, Dave. Be sure and tell him 'hey' next time for me. But not sure what he could say about me since he hasn't heard me play since I was in my 20's.
I just did a (basic 'meat and potatoes' cycle of fifths) version of Secret Love, more as a demonstration of that cycle for anyone trying to get into reharm. It forced me into some weird spots playing on all those chords - hope it isn't reharmful.

Sorry about the electrical noise, I think it may be my microwave.
Sue, I usually factor in lyrics when I know them, but not too much, since music can express beyond words- if that makes any sense.

Hey, I'm inspired to transcribe your work. This one might be accessible. But you have to do something about that noise. It almost spoils it.
You do make perfect sense. Thanks.

But that's a LOT of notes to write out, Sue. (Then I'd have to buy up all copies, so it doesn't, uh, get around.)
The left hand movement and melody are the main things there. The noise is sort of a Bb drone. Best of luck if you attempt it.

oh, right. I just meant "play it", not write it out. Don't underestimate me. But I'll be damned if I'm looping your microwave.

It was worth the noise - what was in the microwave was delicious.

For something different, I just stuck this slightly reharmed intro on "It's You Or No One", followed by two short samples of solo and trio trading on the same song. Fast tempo.

Man, I'm sorry. I don't have that problem there myself, not sure why. If anyone can suggest where else I can upload, I'll reload 'em all up in one post.

I was able to get my friend to let me use some of his webspace. What an ordeal. Esnips was no good for me.
So....after all that I have a shabby sounding clip. My piano is out of tune at the moment. I didn't have time to EQ or position the mics properly. I'm going out of town for 10 days on Thursday and also am in the process of moving. I reharmed this thing and didn't get a chance to even really get it under my fingers, so the feel sucks in certain places. But, here you go.
Ornithology hastily reharmed
Though a bop tune would present some challenges that ballads don't.

That was COOL, Bobadohshe.
Reharming bop tunes is a whole 'nother area. Good to hear you... you sound good.

Nice Bobby...sounds great man! I'd like to see your music for that if you get a chance.
In the middle of trying to get some things down tonight, I hit the fast forward button on the Marantz.....WRONG BUTTON!!! It went into hibernation mode...arggg!...this thing is SO touchy right now. I'll try again after dinner.

The reason is - I'm still a novice at uploading, so I'll have to get a converter program. Sorry again for the size of that download.
Drums - Mike Smith, a great friend and musician who passed away almost a year ago.
Bass - Paul Langosch
We played a few gigs, but mainly played for ourselves in Paul's basement regularly for years, every time he'd get off the road with Tony Bennett.
The whole tune will be on my CD. It was too long to upload it all. Thanks, Carlo. Glad you liked it.

Yeah Dave - I really like that extended bridge on Star Wa.. uh Star Eyes. I did a strange reharm of that tune yesterday, but it turned out more as an intellectual exercise, 'why bother?' type result. Maybe I'll post it anyway.
Those are some cool reharmed chords on the last 'A' of Rainbow you have there.

Dave's version of "Star Eyes" is more true to the mood of the tune. Here's an alternate universe version, overly reharmonized. I played it poorly because I was trying to remember all the chords while I played, so it was hard to get under my hands. But this one's nothing better than a mental exercise anyway - doubt I'll play it again (hopefully.)

SK, have you been inundated with recommendations to use iTunes to convert to mp3? Works for me.

SK..I can't seem to load on this site. I wait the 20 seconds and hit download, after 20 seconds or so, my computer says..."connection timed out or taking too long to respond, try again", which I do, then after about 10-15 seconds it says done and I can't access anything.

Weird - it worked for me. Well, thanks - I can put it on Divshare. So far, none of these upload sites seem to be ideal.
