In Ethan's article I saw mention that linoleum flooring will have the same acoustic properties as hardwood flooring for a cheaper price. So...

I go to the local Home Depot looking for linoleum flooring and everything there says "vinyl", not "linoleum". Are vinyl and linoleum the same thing? Are those terms interchangable?

If I buy vinyl flooring from Home Depot, am I not getting the same acoustic benefits as linoleum that Ethan described as a good alternative to hardwoord?

Sorry, I am clueless on this issue and need help. I don't want to spend money on the wrong thing.

Thanks,
-Charles

Vinyl and Linoleum are not the same thing. But acoustically I don't think there would be much of a difference. Both should reflect all high frequencies pretty well. You just don't want something that is soft and fluffy for your floor.

I would imagine that even bare concrete would reflect just fine.

Right, all of those sound more or less the same. The core issue is reflectivity versus frequency.

A very affordable and cool alternative is to acid stain your concrete (if indeed you have a concrete floor). This is very affordable and does not require great artisan skill.

It does require careful planning and proper equipment. But it is still very affordable. I did it in my studio and people always comment on my cool tortoise shell (brown/black) looking floor.
