At long last..... the melodic maestro..... good article BUT way to much bio.
The present day composer refuses to die.... so why not more about Allan's current music - maybe I'm a bit harsh on Mr. Cleveland's article - or the editing I guess - but I do think that there should've been a LOT more on the new music?

is it on the stands? I'll go pick it up tomorrow.
Precisely now I've scheduled a few hours of Holdsworth music practice.

I enjoyed the article, which seemed largely geared to introducing Allan to new fans.
GP has featured Allan on other occasions over the years (at least once before on the cover) and had transcriptions of his chord progressions and solos.

I can't believe GP got the picture of his Carvin guitars wrong!! He uses his own signature H2 and fatboys not the new HS550 !! What a terrible blunder. How did that get passed editing?!

The same way your post got "passed" spellcheck & grammar; rather it got "past" them.

Holdsworth did put out a book long ago called "Searching For The Uncommon Chord". I have it somewhere, and may pull it out tomorrow. Some of the chord progressions are very difficult to play smoothly, let alone beautifully like Allan does!

Anyone ever work out of Nicolas Slonimsky's Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns? Bill Bruford said that Allan worked through it. I've flipped through it and it looks pretty daunting.

I read that Coltrane had and used the Slominsky book, too. How much of it ended up in his actual music is hard to say - too bad he's not around to ask!
There's a book I've always wanted to look through - Oliver Nelson's "Patterns for Saxophone". But, while it doesn't hurt to learn patterns, and in different keys, but when you're actually improvising, who has time to think of stuff like that?

The intent is to work through it enough for it seep into your playing subconsciously. I can see myself finding that book daunting but I'd really love to get some of those ideas under my fingers. I've played around with Joe viola's Technique for the Saxophone vol 2. It has some great approach note examples. Once again, it's hard to stay focused enough to work through it.

Danzilla : Suggest you look up passed - 'past' is as in 'the past' - a time word. Maybe you should actually check in a dictionary before making yourself look dumb? Or just Google "define:passed"
And fyi there are no spelling or grammar checkers on this forum, and even if there were either sense would have gotten passed a spelling checker.
I also suggest you leave the smart remarks to smarter people. Nobody likes someone who tries to point out spelling others' errors on forums where spelling, grammar and punctuation "ain't" (look that one up) that important, and then make a wrong evaluation themselves!

So, glad to see Holdsworth get the cover of GP Magazine. It's awesome to know that there is still a Guitar Magazine out there that acknowledges real talent.

What impressed me the most about Holdsworth in that article is that he seems like he's still hungry to be the best. I mean the guy is an absolute genius yet his quest continues. It's heartening to me and makes me even more firm in my commitment to never give up on the guitar. I'll play till I die!

I agree, he wants to be "the best". The question is, is it his PERSONAL best or in competition with other people. I venture to say it's the former... but then again, I don't know Allan personally!

Usually those kind of guys compete against themselves... more a question of being the best he can be rather than better than guitarist X.
I mean, who's better Pat Metheny or Allan... ? not even worth discussing as they are both unbelievable at what they do.. I'm amazed at what Pat was doing in 1976 as much as what he did later.. anyone heard the bootleg of him and Gary Burton (duo) in 1976 in the German TV studio?

Yes, I did mean the best HE can be. I saw Van Halen in concert in Vegas in December and I just felt like Eddie wasn't pushing himself at all. That's just my opinion of course. So it was nice to get the impression from the Guitar Player article that Allan was still pushing himself. Not satisfied to stay where he was in terms of his personal ability. One thing that I don't want to do as a guitarist is to get complacent with my ability. I hope I always have to drive to be better.
