Hi,

I want to build a studio in my 18' x 19' garage while keeping an area for storage. I will not record much (or very rarely) but mainly produce and mix music, and I want a decent acoustic to mix.

I'm thinking of a room that would be about 11.6' x 18 or so, but I have a few questions!

• Is it better to have the ceiling high and slanted as it is now (it follows the roof line, going from 7' in the front of the room to 15' high when 12.6' from the front of the room, then going back down at the same angle toward the back of the room)? Or create a new, low ceiling parallel to the floor (I doubt that would be better)?

• With such a ceiling, will room dimensions of 11.6' x 18 create an ok acoustic?

• Would it help to have the side walls slightly angled, so the width of the room would be 10' in the front and 12' in the back? How much help?

Let me know if you need more info to answer my questions? Thanks a lot.

Leave the ceiling angled and leave the walls not angled, then add as much bass trapping as you can manage and treat all the first reflection points. That will be excellent.

Thanks a lot! That makes building that much easier too. What about dimensions? Are they good or do I need to worry about ratio? I mean I can play around with a couple feet in width or length.

Width can be anything up to 13'
Length can be anything up to 19'

So what would be the best dimensions?

I will definitely add bass trapping and absorbing panels once the thing is built (I already have ten 2'x4' panels ready to go, will have to buy the bass traps though).

I'd go with the largest size possible, and 19 by 13 is not bad at all. More here:

Thanks again, so last question:

How do I figure out the ceiling height, given it's slanted? Should I find the average?

Yes, an average is a good compromise.

OK, thanks a lot for all your help! I will come back to this forum once the studio is built to ask you about mini traps and mondo traps! But for now I need to build the room.
