Hi from Australia. I have renovated an existing room that was originally a garage. The dimensions of the room are 18.3 feet (5.57mtrs) by 18.5 feet (5.63mtrs). The ceiling height is 7.88ft (2.4mtr) These are the internal wall dimensions. There is a dual door system in one corner to enter the room with a small airlock (dimensions are 4ft (1.22mtrs x 2.8ft (.860mtr) The cnr of the room the has the enrty airlock has a window on the same wall side which is dual glass with a 100mm airgap with a dimension of 5.3ft(1.6mtr)x 2.95ft (.900). I was able to build an isolated inside wall and ceiling with a 70mm gap between the inner and outer walls. The walls and ceiling are 13mm soundcheck drywall (gyprock in Australia). The gyprock is purposely made to minimize leakage between walls etc. The inner wall and ceiling do not touch the outer walls other than a single beam that is mounted on rubber insulation for the ceiling so it doesn't crash down. The floor currently has carpet over concrete but this will be changed to a heavy linoleum. The room is completely airtight with a specially built air intake /extraction system so we dont suffocate. I intend to build a control room on the end of this existing room but that will be sometime due to budget constraints. The use of this room is for a rehearsal space / recording room for rock'n'roll style bands, mostly loud. I am seeking advice on treating the room realising there will be compromise. I love the idea of Ethan's bass traps and have a room I can set up from scratch. What should I do for the ceiling particularly over the live drums? Do you think I should have bass traps in all the corners of the room or say 3 corners? Should I mix and match somewhat? Should I use difussers? I am looking to tame the sounds in the room so that we can hear each other whilst playing without it being to dead or flat. I am certainly not an expert re sound and could use all the suggestions and ideas that you good people have.

Bass traps in corners will help, and most rooms have 12 corners, not just four. Over the drums you need broadband absorption, especially if you plan to record rehearsals. Yes, diffusion could be useful in a room that size, but it's not mandatory. Good diffusion costs a lot more than good absorption, so your budget should be your guide.

Thanks Ethan for your reply. we will be recording rehearsals so I was wondering about the ceiling particularly over the drums. I have plans for the deepbass/mid high/high traps, would they be an option for the ceiling? I could build a series of them. You talk about broadband absorbtion over the drums, more info please. Can you also clarify the 12 corners. much appreciated

I wouldn't bother to build wood panel bass traps in a room that size. Just use thick rigid fiberglass in corners and flat on the walls as explained in the forum FAQ. As for corners, most rooms have 12 of them. Count them - you'll see. \:D
