I'm not a parent, so I really am asking a question.
Anyway... there's no shortage of CDs out there that are intended for children to listen to. But as I remember, when I was a little kid, I didn't really make a difference between "grownup" music and kid's music. It was all one and the same and I never felt that "grownup" music was boring or daunting. In fact, I think that after I was about five (four?) I actually preferred listening to "grownup" music like classical, the way my parents did. And anyway, I suspect that my parents encouraged me to move on from kiddie records, if only to avoid having to listen to that stuff all day.
What about you guys? Do your kids insist on listening to kiddie music? At what age do they turn their noses up at it? Is there any point to kids' music, other than getting parents to shell out for it?

Kids? What kids?
Now that you mention it, it seems like people use that kind of music like they do TV, as a way to keep kids occupied or distracted.

I hate the stuff and see no redeeming value in it what so ever. My daughter is growing up with a good healthy does of The Beatles, Yo-Yo Ma, Tower Of Power and any other "fun" songs I can find for her to listen to. She loves music so I want to get her started on the right foot.

Kiddie music like "Wee Sing Silly Songs" were made with the primary purpose of driving parents insane or into oncoming traffic (if listened to in the car). They are mostly old folk songs, traditional tunes and ultimately ok; but usually made super-duper sing-songee to massage the brains of children. And get the occassional giggle.
My kids also listen to a lot of kiddified music, like the VeggiTales. The original songs are quite amuzing and whitty; stuff like "Bob & Larry Sing The 70's" is full of what we would consider "bad" takes on classic tunes Like "Proud Mary", "Funkytown" (which was bad enough to begin with), "Carwash" and "Lean On Me". The characters' inserts are what make it really funny and listenable (like when Jr Asparagus goes into the "la-lalalala" part of "Crocodile Rock", and Archibald asks if he's been poisoned and needs to go to the hospital)
Two great songwriters, Andrew Peterson & Randall Goodgame, put out a kids' album the other year, called "Slugs & Bugs & Lullabyes" which has some really funny stuff on it.
Stuff Like Barney or The Wiggles... I try to avoid that. Pure brain rot.
An old friend of a friend put out some "kids music" (Greg Cooney, if anyone's heard of him). He did a show at my church, and I was asked to back him up. Me in my serious musician mindset scoffed at it and played it with nose held high in the air. But when I thought about it, sometimes you just have to let loose and have fun; and it was fun enough and decent music at the heart of it. Just a different audience than your average bar. Possibly a higher IQ than a bar, too.

And when does it switch over from "kiddie" music to "real/serious" music? When Hannah Montana hits puberty? When the Jonas Brothers are able to shave? When the Doodlebops tour without their makeup? Or 10 years later when they put it back on?

My "kiddie music" growing up consisted of Lucio Battisti ("I Giardini Di Marzo" - hey, you're Italian or you're not) and Roy Orbinson and my first 7" vinyl single (yes indeed, you read it correctly) was George Harrison's "Set On You".
If I see what kids grow up on these days in Belgium (Youtube "K3" and listen for yourselves) I guess I was better of But some of it I actually really, really like ... I'm a sucker for Mega Mindy (video link) but the difference here is that the actress can actually really sing very well, and the song is built up really well, with a catchy chorus and the reintroduction of rock guitars
To a certain degree it depends on what you expose your kids to, but as much as I hope my kids (when that day ever comes) will listen to the same type of music as I do, I will not be a musical fascist and refuse to have them listen to certain types of music.
Anyway, off to bed for me

My youngest had one of those Leap Frog books where you stick the cartridge in, and it plays back audio that coincides with what's on the page, prompting you to flip pages at the 'ding'. We got her a classical music history cartridge that she loved. A few months later, my wife's out to breakfast with her friends, and my daughter's along as well. Someone's cell phone goes off with a certain classical ring, and my daughter spurts out "hey that's Mozart!" Everyone's jaw dropped. So I guess it all depends what kind of music you get for them.

What about School House Rock?
"Three's a Magic Number", "Conjunction Junction", and who can forget "... oh how I hope and pray but today I am still just a bill.."
I have an VHS somewhere with all the songs on it.
Good stuff, Maynard.

My own opinion is that in most cultures there seems to be little that differentiates children's & adult's music except as has to do with basic qualities such as rhythm, melodic simplicity, etc, that have more to do with simplicity/complexity than subject matte, per se. To me this is valid insofar as it helps guide children into the "dance" of music. Even in that contex, this is mostly a construct of the last 100 years or so in Western culture, which is an era that has seen an increasing division of society into demographic groups that can be targeted for margeting (tennagers, for example).
I will go along with the mention of "Charlie Waffles" (a sideral character on a TV show..."Two & 1/2 Men", played by actor Charlie Sheen) as one of the most hilarious kiddie entertainers of the

I totally agree with SilverDragonSun (up the page a ways). My children will be born jammin it out to La Villa Strangiato. Rush all the way. We need to teach kids real music early on so that they don't listen to Hannah Montana and the Jonas brothers ( man I got a beef with them guys. look like they're 20 and haven't hit puberty yet.) Society should send there kids to school singing 'Another Brick In The Wall' !!!!
