I read a Rives paper written by Ethan which mentioned a membrane in conjunction with panel traps.

Please advise--I have multiple sheets of 3" spinglass (JM) and am interested in making as low and broad bass absorption as possible.

Thanks for any help!
Phil

Hi Phil,

Check out Ethan's FAQ first. You will find it in the "Read This First Post" from Ethan on the main page of this forum. It's very long but has answers to almost everything you can imagine. I have read it three times now and it makes more and more sense every time I read it. Save yourself money and time. Read the FAQ! There you will find information on how to construct the types of Traps you seek.

By the way here is the link to ethans faq http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html
Here is also a link to his how to on membrane panel bass traps.
http://www.ethanwiner.com/basstrap.html
At the top of the basstrap article--you will notice that he recommends to use the broadband absorber type bass traps for room smaller than 25x15. I dont really understand why membrane traps arent recommended for small rooms. It might be because of the limited bandwidth of membrane traps "the low-bass trap is effective at frequencies between about 80 Hz. and 160 Hz., and the high-bass trap absorbs frequencies between 150 Hz. and 300 Hz."
To achieve extra low and broadband bass absorption you could just use 6" rigid fiberglass panels across the corners. The thicker you make them the lower they can absorb. Even with 6" thick panels you still arent going to get tons of absorption below 80hz. But the more panels you use the more absorption you will get. Plus you will drop the RT60 at those low frequencies.

I am running into a similar problem in my room. I have a 20db gain at 50hz and a 20db null at 80hz. I am sure if i changed where I am sitting it would be improved, but since my stereo is in my living room I am pretty much stuck where I am. But for now it is 8" thick panels for me.
