One of the outputs (for each mic's transformer that you want to include) has to have a convenient way to continue to the FOH, hence the need for a snake or whip end. A transformer is needed to isolate the FOH board from your board to minimize possible ground looping noise. The 'direct out' is his best bet. The isolated out is yours.
