Is white noise on max gain normal?

Hi,
I have just bought my first mixer a few days ago, a Yamaha mg82cx, and after playing with it a bit, I have noticed that when the gain is set to max, and so are the volumes, I hear white noise. This via headphones, and without anything connected to any input. If I turn the effects on to the max, they operate on this white noise and give me a repeating sound for flanger, faser, and auto wha effects. Then when I turn down the gain, I can still hear the effect on the white noise though quieter. This indicates that the white noise was still there but quieter.
I am wondering if it is normal for this mixer to behave this way, or is it defective and I should try to replace it? I am also wondering, in case that it is normal, if other mixers are the same in this regard, and I should just forget about it?

With both the gain and the volume fully up, you will hear white noise thru your monitors. Best way to solve it? Don't do it.

Signal-to-noise ratio is exactly what it indicates. Internal noise in the mixer can become very audible if you max out all gain stages.

Thank you for your answers. I understand that it is normal under the circumstances, and so I would keep my mixer and enjoy it.

I highly suggest you don't hit play with those settings, unless you really don't like your monitors!!!!!

Just about all audio gear has some noise when cranked.
The important thing is its Signal-to-Noise ratio.
Like audiorulez said...stand back if you are going to hit *Play* with the faders up all the way like that!!!
So...as long as your signal sufficiently exceeds the background noise of the equipment...the noise gets masked and is pretty much irrelevant, unless it's THAT loud that you also need to crank your signal real loud to overcome it....in which case your listening levels will probably be a bit crazy.
My console has noise when I crank up the faders with no signal...but when I drop the faders to my optimal listening levels...it's quiet as a mouse.
