Not really trying to nail that song, but it's the first song that came to mind with the tone I was thinking of. (Roxy Music's "Over You" is another, but less pronounced.) Very natural sounding, but with lots of a "clanky" sort of thing going on. What's that about? How they do that? Is it a P Bass thing?

Yep. That's a very modern P Bass played with a pick tone.

You know, despite that album 'Flesh and Blood' featuring bassists Neil Jason and Alan Spenner, Phil Manzanera played bass on that track. I think that kind of bass tone is very popular with guitarists. Manzanera played used that bass tone on some of his solo albums too.

Yeah man, p-bass strung with new roundwounds, played with a pick.

Say what ya want about Green Day, but that bass tone is lovely.

P-Bass and flatwounds; maybe old roundwounds pre-greased to reduce finger noise. Dial down the tone knobs. If possible, avoid the ceramic magnets and go for the Alnicos. But that's just me.

there is no cure for the P-Bass blues; just get one!

Stop it! STOP IT!!

I've got a new Rickenbacker, with humbuckers (hummenbackers?) on the way. (Hopefully that's really on the way, not in the way that Godot is on the way...but what with Ric's production schedule lately...Seriously, it's an '05 model I'm waiting on!) I want to see what it can do first. I've heard it favorably compared with the P Bass.

I did stop by GC yesterday, where they had one of the "new & improved" P Basses. I hate to admit it, but it did indeed seem improved. The bridge now has much more mass, the saddles are flat on the bottom so they'll drop better, the maple fingerboard is gloss finished, and the back of the neck has a delightful satin finish that makes your thumb feel all naughty. (Cough.) Anyway, nice bass.

Don't mean to hiJack but... Really? Is this a production model?

Very, very sad. I just went through ebay. Almost new, spotless, and I couldn't stand waiting 2 years.

Sorry again, back to topic....

You're played with a pick.

As much as I can't stand that album I will always give props to that bass tone. It does bring a heaping helping of The Rock to the table.

Bump, my sentiments exactly.

Oh, and you're a heaping helping.

Yep. It's a 4004 (specifically, the 4004L). These are much, much, much less well known that the 4003 model; a lot of people don't realize RIC even makes more than one bass model! And that explains, unfortunately, why they are always at the end of the production queue...which, as you note, is already years long. So the eBay prices are going crazy, because (a) who wants to wait 2+ years for an instrument (and a production instrument, at that, albeit a really excellent one), and (b) the recent price hike means that a new one will now cost significantly more, on top of the years-long wait. I'm glad I put my name in when I did.

It's tough waiting. It's especially tough when I can get a really excellent bass now, or keep waiting for a model I've never even seen in person (much less played!) with an, um, indefinite build date. Oh well.

Ah hell. Maybe I should sell my 5 string fretless & go for a P bass on top of the Ric. I never play it, and I really dig 4 strings & frets.

i read an old interview with matt freemean of rancid in bass player. think 1995. in it he said he called green day's producer for dookie, rob cavallo, about dirnt's tone. he said it was a J through an SVT. obviously with roundwounds and played with a pick.

later records are done with a P. i love a P more than i love a J, but that tone is all J.

robb.

I think I get a respectable Dirnt tone out of my 4003. Rounds and a pick. And a whole lotta 'tude!

Yeah, about the only thing a Ric can't do is show up at my door soon enough. \:D So I guess I'll wait it out. (My 4003 is strung with flats; its frets would never forgive me if I changed that, I'm afraid.)

Unless I get impulsive.

Yeah, I used to, as I remember, get something close to that with my first 4001, rounds and a pick. GK 800RB might have helped too. But with this Ric I'm kind of in the middle of a flat wound experiment. At least until I hear it back on tape, hard disc(?), this week end.

Oh my, the sound of that neck p-up, classic toaster, soloed with a pick....

Oh, I suppose I'm an Experiment.

Every single 14 year old comes in playing that song. And they think they are playing walking bass.

I hope I never hear it again, even though the tone of the bass on the recording is quite nice.

Eew, that would be awful.

It's a kind of tone that I've heard on heaps of songs. I was really sad that that's the song that came to mind...yeah.

I guess it's the "Money" of this generation ...

I get a pretty decent "Longview" tone as my standard tone.

- P-bass
- Not new, but not old roundwounds
- Tone knob around 1/2 (depending on the age of the strings, new strings = no tone, old strings = full tone).

I vary the attack I'm using fingerstyle and, if needed, adjust the tone knob for different tunes.

actually the bass mike used to record was a gibson g3 grabber going through and ampeg. matt freeman used a fender jazz through the ampeg to record and out come the wolves.

Funny - that's a sound I avoid like the plague! Muddy thumps for me any day.

Hey, mud can be good! I have a bass with flats, & sometimes I like to roll the tone off nice & low, or even throw on a bridge mute, and just thud like mad. Mmm, nice. But then, lots of other things are also nice!

Thanks for the link.

"Bones" by Radiohead is another good example, although that signal has more processing, I think. Great tune anyway, & fab bass sound!

Well... back when I was 14... I'm pretty sure I didn't even know what EQ was. And that was one of the songs I could really match! I don't know, my answer now is something to the effect of a triangle on your para, maybe with more top-end than low-end, but not much. This is just deskchair speculation though. Somebody with a para handy...? All I've got is a Jazz Bass and a laptop at the moment.

I've got a 4-band onboard on my 5-string, and mostly I just bring the bottom all the way up. I don't like excessively bright tones. I want my bass to growl, not chirp! \:D

Ahem...
From the November 1994 issue of Bass Player, page 9, article by Karl Coryat:

"On recent tv appearances, Mike has been seen thrashing an aluminum-neck Kramer, an alternative axe he wielded while his main weapon, a mid-70s Gibson G-3, was in the shop. "The Kramer must weigh 20 pounds; it's really sturdy, but it's like a log with strings. I recorded most of Dookie with an '85 Precision, but on Longview I used a Gibson Les Paul bass. Then I broke the neck in half." His amp is an Ampeg SVT. And his strings? "Any string would work; the fact is I'll break them if I don't change them every night."

For the record, the pic in the article shows Dirnt playing the aforementioned Kramer, which appears to be a rather bilious shade of yellow and has one white soapbar pickup and a ginormous white pickguard: also, Dirnt himself bears that kind of startled expression that you only get when being approached by a rabid woodchuck.
If you know what I mean.

You should probably thank me for keeping magazines much longer than I should.

You're welcome.

Peace,

wraub
