Hello ethan....Okay I had communicated earlier with you and you requested that I post on this website. I have a small room of apprx. 250 sq ft that I am converting into a music listening room. The room has hard wood flooring, a large throw on floor, a handful of small acoustic tiles (6)scattered throughout the room and a leather love seat/sofa in the middle of the room. On the back wall, where I want to build and place my diffuser, there is two small windows (2x4'each). Also these windows have pleated curtains but since I have two windows and curtains I can not anchor my room diffuser to the wall. My only two options would be to suspend it from the ceiling near the back wall or place leg supports and again position it up near the wall. My concern is will this three or four inch gap between the rear wall and the diffuser cause unwanted resonance? Desirable or undesirable? don't forget I have those two windows which I believe I can fill with sheets of fiberglass insulation to fill up the window wells.
My next question is bigger better than smaller or vica versa? I was contemplating using one sheet of 4x8 birch wood and make one large diffuser. Would this be overkill? The back wall is approximately 14' long. Would it be better to build two 4x4 or just build one 4x4'?
My audio equipment consist of Krell, Monster and Sonus Faber. Hopefully you can enlighten me the proper approach to my situation. I am crafted enough to build the diffuser. Any thoughts....please?

I imagine either of those will be fine.

Probably not, since it's not a sealed cavity. But you could always stuff some fiberglass or acoustic foam in there just to be sure.

Yes, that's what I'd do. A small diffusor on a large wall is not so useful - acoustic treatment is about percentage of surface coverage.

Making progess. Damn... I have to confess my room diffuser is looking good! I have decided to make two 4x4' (cutting a a 4x8' in half)due to the weight and size of a 4x8' room diffusers. They will take up 80& of my rear wall. Ethan I have another question...I have read where indidividuals have stated that for diffusers to be effective the listener needs to be at least 9' from them. Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of having 9' between my listening sofa and where the room diffuser will be suspended along the back wall. At best I may be 6' away from where my diffusers will be and maybe 8 or ten feet from my Sonus Fabers. I am limited in square footage. Nevertheless, I should hear an appreciatable difference with the diffuser then not having any at all. I believe, overall, the acoustics of the room will be changed dramatically with the application of the diffusers and other acoustic treatment. Yes? I used to live in New Milford eons ago and Danbury as well. Currently I am living in Houston Texas.

The conventional wisdom is you need to be about one foot away for each inch of well depth. I've done some listening tests and found that even when you're closer diffusion can be useful. As an extreme example I made a simple video showing what happens when you're very close to a diffusor. It's near the bottom of the list here:

Sitting here an enjoying my room diffuser this evening. I am amazed how it has made listening to my music so much more enjoyable. It is not "irritating" to the ears any more. As a matter of fact my wife who is down stairs says it sounds better to her while she sits down stairs watching television (she is happy listening to a boom box) for it doesn't irritate her any more ( for her to comment that it sounds different/better especially from downstairs say quite a bit).No more "ringing" and the depth in my small room doesn't so small acoustically. My wells are about 5 inches deep and I am sitting about five feet from the diffuser. The diffuser is 4x4' and has significant weight for it two people to transport it up to my music room. I am impressed and pleased as to how well it truly works. Thank you so much for all of your advice. I am going to take some time off by not working on my music room and enjoy it. Again much thanks!
