Cross posted in multiple forums because I'm interested in what people have to say about various aspects of this.
I'd like a critique please of this piece of music: http://www.kendenny.com/music/KenDenny/F_minor.mp3
This piece contains only organ and bass. Any aspect you want to comment on, bass playing, keyboard playing, composition, instrument tone, recording quality, whatever is welcome.

Well, it's hard to tell where you're headed with this project. Right now, it sounds like 2 guys who sat down and put together a 'bed' for a song. The 'bed' reminds me of so many tunes from the 60s(anything by the Outsiders). Don't know if that approach is relevant today, but then WTF do I know . I'd like to hear a melody line of some sort to give the project a head.
As far as the instruments go, I'd give the bass some identity of it's own. Sounds like it's trying to be the head instrument. Think counterpoint for the bass to the organ, then work on getting that melody going.
As an old Hammond player, the best thing that I can suggest you do is change sounds occasionally(drawbars, percussion, volume,etc.). Also, hi-speed Leslie gets old REAL fast. Best used sporatically.. as a diversion.
Although I've sat where you're currently sitting, with an idea and not much more, I'd much rather listen to a project that has some kind of melody line(sung or played) that I can grab hold of. Good luck with the project.
Best, Paul

Instrument tone and recording quality from an mp3?
Surely you jest.

Thanks Paully. I got some of the same comments from the keyboard forum. I working on writing some lyrics for it but it's not going that well.
Audiorulez. LOL. I know what you mean. I guess I just meant to point out any glaring stuff or maybe offer a suggestion like "cut some of the high mids on the bass" or "a little less of the 4 drawbar and a little more of the 2".

Gizzy....I looked at the tempo and you seem to be on time and together most of the time.
The bass is trying to be the tempo, so if you had a drum machine/drummer I would have the bass player not be in line all of the time with the organ. Two sitcks and a book. Don't laugh, that is how I started to be a drummer at 7.
The organ sounds could change a bit for the different aspects of the tune, chorus vs the melody segment areas.
Like the others that commented here, this sounds like a bed work for additional instruments.
If you could use some cording along with the lead part and not chops all of the time I think it would help too. Left hand a bit of Jazz cording and right hand melody. This would add some additional dimension to the tracks I would believe.
Do you have an option to record more than what we are hearing, two stereo tracks?
Just some off the cuff comments. Sounds good, just don't know where you are going to take this. Tell us what your intention is with this and what equipment you are using for recording.
Good luck with the work.

Thanks Jazzman. I'm getting a drummer friend to come record drum tracks for it and I will redo the bass and keyboard. Another thing I realized that no one pointed out is that the verse is more interesting than the chorus, so I'm going to change it around to make what is now the chorus be the verse and vice versa. I'm also going to use piano in the verse and save the organ for the chorus. I'm working on writing some lyrics for it but haven't gotten very far yet.
Recording equipment consist of an Alesis HD-24 recorder, a Mackie VLZ 24-4 for preamps. The organ was recorded on three tracks using two Samson CO3 mics on the Leslie horn, one in front and one on the side and a Shure SM-57 on the lower speaker. Bass was recorded on two tracks, one direct and the other a Samson CO3 on the amp.

Gizzy, save the tracks on the bass. When recording think of yourself standing in front of the stage. Where are the players and where would their equipment be.
The organ sound should come out of both speakers like you have, however don't pan hard right and hard left because it could get annoying for the listener to the spinning horn going from side to side.
The drummers' snare should be in the center along with the bass drum and the hat off to one side, more to the right as if you were standing in front of him. This of course if you have a few mic's to play with. If not and have only one mic to use or two, I would capture the whole set and move the entire set a little to the right of the field.
The bass could favor the left if you were standing in front of him. The pieces of the band will fill in the field if you place them a little away from each other. Cording could be a little off center while the lead parts in the middle.
I know you are going to fun with this.
If you have a piano part that will become the lead instrument and in the center field, then I would off-set the organ further over toward the bass player.
Remember the bass and drummer should complement themselves. The bass is the backbone and anchor.
Don't forget you can have stereo for each instrument, but if you do keep the spread somewhat tight and move the instruments away from each other to fill in the total field to make your sound full.
Having only a few parts as you have started, you were trying to have a full sound field from right to left. But when you begin to add the other instruments, you will find that the fields for each instrument no longer need to be spread out so much.
AH.......just a couple of more comments, don't mean to tell you what to do, just my experience in the studio. You will see what I mean when you get the other pieces in the mix.
Others here can add or subtract from my thoughts to give you something else to think about. Just listen to songs that inspire you and pay attention to the instruments and see where they fall in the mix.
Good luck with the production.

Thanks Jazzman. That's a big help. I'll keep all that in mind when I add more instruments to the song.
