I'm making some bass traps which I don't want to drill directly into the wall (some will be free-standing, some will be hung on the wall) - what should I use for the back of the traps? Thick plywood? Thin plywood? Also, what should be used for the back of a corner trap?

Thick plywood or MDF will work, but it has to be at least 3/4 inch thick. IMO, if you can't attach directly to the walls you're better off with fiberglass traps instead.

Thanks. What do you mean by fibreglass traps (the 703 that goes in all the traps is fibreglass, so not sure what the distinction is - is it a different type of trap, or do you just mean no wooden front panel?)

Yes, plain rigid fiberglass four inches thick, as described in my Acoustics FAQ.

Ethan, Since this is my first posting after quite some time lurking (and reading) in the shadows, I'd like to add my sincere thanks for all the knowledge you've freely shared with this community. You are generous beyond what words can describe. I first saw your "A Cello Rhondo" video over a year ago (?) and laughed out loud when I was consulting your site the other day and realized you were the guy in that video!

A quick question about panel traps: You seem to be making a consistent recommendation against freestanding panel traps. I have a 24'x33' (12' sloped ceilings) live room which I will be using for recordings of acoustic musicians - many accompanied by my Mason and Hamlin 7-foot grand piano. I'd like to leverage the natural reverberation of the room as much as possible but want to treat for room mode problems (I get a significant bump at 125hz when measuring your pink noise sample with a 1/3 octave analyzer). I have inherited a wall of windows at the back of the room and some other good and bad shapes that deviate from a perfect rectangle (angles across the back- left and right of the stage and a bumpout on the stage-left wall from a chimney in the adjacent room). My perception is that bass panel traps would be more efficient than simple 703 panels (especially for this size room?), but wall irregularities are going to make it difficult to attach a trap to the wall in every corner (and/or spot where I detect a spike in the bass). For a room of my size and application, do you absolutely recommend against freestanding/hanging panel traps with a 3/4" plywood or MDF backing? If there are clear disadvantages, could you please give some specifics? Apologies if I've missed something obvious in previous posts or FAQ's that would have answered this question.

I'm also curious about this.

Yes, wood panel traps will be great in a room like that.

You could make them free-standing, but it's much more work and they'll weight a lot more.
