In his acoustic overview, Ethan suggests using a mixture of deep bass, high bass and mid-high traps along a wall: Would it be possible to make a combination bass and mid-high trap? If you put a layer of 703 on top of the plywood front of a bass trap, would you then have one trap that deals with a wider range of frequencies?

Whether I suggest wood panel traps or plain fiberglass depends on the size of your room. Larger rooms will benefit more from wood panel traps. Also, as explained in my Plans article, you shouldn't have anything touching the wood.

Thanks. So, for a room that's approx 14' x 18.5', would it make sense to do deep bass traps (wood fronted) in the corners, and use non-wood traps elsewhere?

For that size room you are better off with simpler broadband absorbers in the corners. Look at the paragraph in the beginning of Ethan's article:

Please understand that the bass traps described in this article are intended mainly for larger rooms. For rooms smaller than 25 by 15 feet you'll usually do better with broadband bass traps made from thick rigid fiberglass placed in the room corners. This is described in my Acoustics FAQ linked above. Once all of the corners are treated, then it makes sense to consider adding bass traps like these flat on the walls.
